Why Tesla EVs Aren’t All Updated at the Same Time

If you own a Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) electric vehicle, you may be wondering why you may not be receiving updates for your vehicle at the same time as other Tesla EV owners. While you may be tempted to surmise that this is due to some inefficiency on the part of the automaker, it turns out that there are perfectly logical reasons why different vehicles receive these (often) monthly updates several days or even weeks apart.

The first consideration that determines when a Tesla vehicle receives an update has to do with the particulars of the vehicle and where that vehicle is located at the time of the update. For example, if you own a Model Y, you may not receive the latest feature update at the same time as owners of the Model S. This is because the company may choose to first send out updates to one model and then send to other models one at a time until all vehicle owners receive the updates. Or a specific update may be intended to address an issue reported in particular models, so other models may receive that update last as a nice-to-have feature.

Similarly, the region where you are located may influence whether your vehicle is first to get an update or whether it’s among those that are updated later. For example, if an improved feature is intended to improve battery performance in regions with more humidity, vehicles in locations that don’t meet this criteria may be updated last while those most likely to benefit will receive the update first.

The second major reason why Tesla sends out updates in a controlled manner is to observe and respond to any issues that may be triggered as those updates are made. If there is a bug in an update that is being rolled out, the technical team quickly addresses that bug before too many Teslas are affected. This bug would be more problematic if all owners of Teslas were negatively affected by a defect brought on by an update to the vehicles’ software and systems.

Once this phased-update release shows that motorists aren’t reporting any problems traceable to that update, the company can then send that particular update to all other Teslas at the same time.

In case you are anxious to receive a particular update, don’t try to force such an update to come through. The company recommends that you keep your vehicle connected to a Wi-Fi network as often as possible because this is the preferred channel through which updates are sent.
