Toyota set a nine-month European sales record in 2026 on the strength of an internal product shift rather than market conquest, with electrified vehicles now making up 87% of what the company sells across the region. Combined volume across both brands edged up 0.6% to 936,042 units, but that number masks a dramatic reshaping of the lineup.
Non-electrified sales account for most of what changed underneath the flat headline. Vehicles carrying no electric motor fell from roughly 210,000 to 122,419 over the period, a retreat of around 40% that outpaced EU-wide combustion declines by more than two to one, with both fuel types posting 18.6% contractions across the EU through August.
Commercial models absorbed most of what was left, with the Hilux and Proace range together registering 113,352 units, nearly all of them diesel-powered.
Within the passenger car lineup, the hybrid transition has reached near-total completion, with just two conventional Yaris models appearing in registration records over the nine months and the remaining 125,258 all hybrids.
The Aygo X reached 95% hybrid penetration not long after the model went on sale, with 78,509 of 82,581 buyers choosing the electrified version. At 155,066 registrations, the Yaris Cross Hybrid led the entire Toyota brand, its tally equal to 18% of total volume. Plug-in versions of the C-HR and RAV4 added around 35,000 sales between them.
The Corolla stands apart, with fewer than half of its 46,643 registrations carrying a hybrid drivetrain, reflecting lower adoption rates in eastern European markets where the electrified share averages 59%.
Battery-electric registrations climbed 136%, reaching 104,832 for the nine months, a total that exceeds Lexus’s entire European output. Leading in volume was the C-HR+ at 29,616, with the bZ4X Touring at 8,776, the Urban Cruiser at 14,172 and the bZ4X at 26,270 filling out the top four.
The Proace Max BEV added 149%, reaching 3,379 units. Measured against the EU market’s 21.7% BEV share, Toyota’s 11.2% figure shows how far the transition still has to travel. The hybrid remains the engine of the business.
Ranked second among European passenger car brands by volume, Toyota saw its share ease from 7.2% to 7.1% as its 0.6% growth trailed the broader market’s 5.3% rise through August. The gains reflected stronger retention of existing buyers, not an expanded customer base. Lexus was the soft spot, with registrations falling 4% to 62,597, though the LBX Hybrid drew 20,512 buyers.
Annual totals won’t be available until January 2027, but battery-electric sales are on course for around 140,000. Where market share lands will indicate whether Toyota’s electric models are drawing buyers from outside its existing base, or whether the record nine months was built largely on loyalty.
It remains to be seen whether EV startups like Rivian Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ: RIVN) can also make a strong mark on the auto market in Europe as electric vehicles continue to displace gasoline drivetrains.
