Washington State to Ban ICE Vehicles by 2030

The age of the internal combustion engine vehicle may finally be drawing to a close. After using fossil fuel vehicles for nearly a century, several territories around the world are now turning to zero-emission electric cars in a bid to combat climate change. A new bill signed into law by Washington State Governor Jay Inslee would see the state ban the sale of most nonelectric cars by the year 2030. As such, Washington State joins the dozens of local and national governments that have pledged to limit or outright ban the sale of internal combustion engine vehicles in the future.…

Google Trends Reveals Record-Breaking Interest in EVs

Interest in zero-emission electric vehicles seems to be on the rise based on recent data from Google Trend. As gas prices around the country rose over the past few months, more and more Americans searched for electric vehicles on online search engine Google. Google Trend, which analyzes top search queries and their popularity on Google Search, has revealed that online interest in electric vehicles peaked in March as gas prices reached an all-time high, partly due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the effect it has had on crude oil supply. But according to Jesse Toprak, the chief auto analyst…

New Report Reveals Growing EV Sales While Gasoline Car Sales Slump

A new report reveals that more Americans are purchasing electric vehicles while sales of gas cars continue to dwindle. Electric vehicles are firmly dominating their market share, accounting for about 4% of total car sales in 2020 to 6% last year. The adoption of electric vehicles has received support from the Biden administration. The administration introduced a tax credit of $7,500 on all electric and plug-in hybrids bought new or used after 2010. The credit amount differs depending on the vehicle’s battery capacity. Many Americans are switching from gas-powered cars as shown in the report released by Alliance for Automotive…

UK Could Introduce Toll Roads to Generate Road Funding

As the United Kingdom government continues with its agenda to reduce emissions, it is looking to introduce toll roads. This is a mode of collecting tax from electric car drivers who do not pay fuel tax. Currently, UK ministers are looking into introducing a network of toll roads while discussing initiatives that will tax drivers. Each year, fuel taxes account for 1.2% of the national income. The number is expected to reduce with the government looking to reduce emissions to net zero. Meanwhile for the first time in over a decade, Chancellor Rishi Sunak is expected to cut fuel duty…

New Report Investigates Myths About EV Particulate Pollutants

A new report by the motoring company RAC disputes the claims that electric vehicle tires and brakes create more particulates than those of gas cars. The company commissioned battery electrochemist Dr. Euan McTurk to address the negative myths of electric vehicles specifically on emissions generated from tire and brake wear. According to Simon Williams, the company's EV spokesperson, RAC hopes that positive real-life experiences will clear up the confusion surrounding EVs. The report, released on Friday, investigates the levels of toxic particulate matter known as PM 2.5s, which are said to be worse in comparison to emissions from ICE vehicles.…

Survey Reveals US Auto Dealers Aren’t Sold on Electric Vehicles

A new report reveals that U.S. car dealers are not happy with the Biden administration's direction in the auto industry. According to the Dealer Outlook Survey for 2022, dealers have aired complaints affecting the industry including the president’s plan to boost sales of electric vehicles. The survey was released by Automotive News and relied on data from 196 car dealers and dealership managers. Increasing Nickel Prices Worsen EV Supply Chain Woes

The dramatic increase in nickel prices is raising concerns of electric car makers. Last week, the price of nickel increased by almost 250% to about $100,000 per ton, and as a result the London Metal Exchange halted trading of the base metal for that entire day. Electric vehicle (“EV”) producers are dealing with mineral supply chain disruptions leading them to struggle to maintain sustainable production costs.  Now with the war in Ukraine, Russia is facing sanctions that have included the U.S. ban of oil and gas imports. In retaliation, Russia banned exports of more than 200 products. As a result…

General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) to Conduct Tests of EVs as Home Power Backup Systems

Last week, General Motors (NYSE: GM) announced that it would be partnering with Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) to test the use of electric cars in powering a home during an outage. The programs come at a time that climate change is driving conversations on energy efficiency as more companies invest into battery electric vehicles (“BEVs”). The test is expected to take place by this summer in northern and central California. Last year, GM announced that it would phase out the production of diesel- and gasoline-powered vehicles by 2035 as the company continues to grow its focus on EVs. According…

Environmental Groups Urge California to Enforce Stricter Emissions Rules

Last week, more than eight environmentalists and organizations wrote a letter to California Governor Gavin Newsom asking him to enforce stricter emission regulations. According to Scott Hochberg whose organization Center for Biological Diversity’s Climate Law Institute co-signed the letter, Californians deserve an electric future as the residents deal with the highest gas prices in the nation with gasoline costing $5 per gallon. The environmental groups and organizations want the governor and the state air regulators to support efforts that will increase electric vehicles (“EVs”) and set higher annual emissions reductions for internal combustion engine (“ICE”) vehicles. They want 7% annual…

Panasonic Searches for Possible Sites to Set Up US Battery-Making Factory

Panasonic Corp. is scouting for places to set up its U.S. factory, which will supply automaker Tesla with batteries. The company is looking for locations in Oklahoma and Kansas to manufacture 4,680 cells. This initiative could potentially lead to supplying other car manufacturers with the same batteries. Panasonic has been a longtime Tesla supplier, and the project is expected to start in 2024. This is a significant step for the company, which is facing high demand for its batteries. It will also help Panasonic catch up with its competition, such as South Korea’s LG Energy Solution and China’s Contemporary Amperex…
