Volkswagen’s new family of compact, lower-priced electric cars has pulled in close to 150,000 orders since the first models rolled off the line in June. Rising fuel costs and accessible pricing have drawn European buyers toward its smallest EVs much faster than the company projected. Group sales chief Martin Sander described a sharp acceleration in European demand for fully electric vehicles, attributing the surge to both the new lineup and the pressure of sustained gas prices.
Four models make up the Electric Urban Car Family, all built on a common platform: the Skoda Epiq, the VW ID. Polo, the Cupra Raval and the VW ID. Cross. Pricing starts at $29,000 for the ID. Polo Trend, which delivers a 207-mile range on a standard charge, while the ID. Cross, a compact SUV designed to rival VW’s own best-selling European model, opens at $32,000 in Germany.
Across the continent in Q3, Volkswagen Group made 209,100 battery-electric vehicle deliveries, a 20% rise against the same period last year, while orders for that period ran 60% ahead of the prior year’s comparable figure.
By the end of September, European battery-electric deliveries had reached 586,100 units, 12% above where they stood a year earlier. Fully electric models made up one in every five vehicles the group sold across Europe in Q3, with battery-electric cars now representing around 40% of incoming orders.
In Germany, VW’s home market, orders for electric cars have overtaken those for combustion-engine vehicles, a milestone few expected to arrive this soon. To keep pace, the company is retooling capacity at a number of facilities as demand has run well beyond its initial expectations.
Outside Europe, however, the group’s overall numbers tell a more complicated story. Group-wide battery-electric deliveries from January to September 2026 totaled 678,700 units, compared with 717,700 in the equivalent span of 2025, a decline of 5.4%. Two markets account for almost all of that gap.
The withdrawal of the $7,500 federal tax credit in the U.S. coupled with the introduction of import tariffs pushed deliveries to a mere 14,900 units through September, from 68,700 in the same stretch of last year, a fall of 78.4%.
VW has wound down production of the ID.4 in the country, with its successor, the ID. Tiguan, due in showrooms in early 2027. Overall, Volkswagen Group has moved 6.01 million vehicles through September across all powertrains and markets, 9% below the equivalent period last year.
VW’s success in boosting its sales after ramping up the production of more affordable models could give other EV makers like Massimo Group (NASDAQ: MAMO) additional impetus to consider broadening their lineup with these lower-priced electric vehicles.
