American Firm Unveils Innovative EV Battery That Needs 10 Minutes to Fully Recharge

An American firm has unveiled electric vehicle battery technology that could speed up EV charging rates significantly and allow EV drivers to charge their cars in as little as 10 minutes. New York-based Sionic Energy has designed a novel EV battery that uses a 100% silicon anode rather than the graphite that's used in most lithium-ion battery configurations to super-boost its energy density. Sionic Energy developed the battery with the help of silicon battery material manufacturer Group14 Technologies which is set to ramp up production of a silicon-carbon composite dubbed the SCC55. The firm found that silicon anodes increase energy…

Recent Battery Breakthrough Could Revolutionize EV Industry

Dalhousie University researchers have made a battery breakthrough that could potentially revolutionize the struggling electric vehicle sector. While battery electric vehicles or BEVs are expected to replace internal combustion engine (ICE) cars as the world's primary mode of vehicular transportation, they are still a work in progress. Using the University of Saskatchewan's Canadian Light Source, Dalhousie University and University of Saskatchewan scientists have discovered a new type of battery that can retain 80% of its original capacity after 20,000 charging cycles or 8 million kilometers. With current U.S. regulations stating that electric vehicle batteries should retain at least 80% of…

Incoming Trump Team Plans to Undo Biden Policies Favoring EVs

The transition team behind President-elect Donald Trump has revealed that the incoming administration has plans to undo the outgoing administration's EV policies. Trump has been extremely critical of electric cars and the billions of dollars the Biden administration has invested into EVs, green infrastructure, and clean energy as a whole. During his second presidential campaign, Trump promised to rescind all unspent funds that had been dedicated to advance green energy goals. With the new administration just weeks away from taking over officially, Trump's team states the controversial billionaire plans to cut off all support for electric cars and charging stations…

Stanford Study Suggests Current EV Battery Lifespan Could Be 40% Longer

A recent study from Stanford University Precourt Institute for Energy and the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory has found that the average lifespan for electric vehicle batteries could be 40% longer than manufacturers expected. Researchers at the SLAC-Stanford Battery Center, a joint initiative between the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and the Precourt Institute for Energy found that existing EV batteries could remain functional for much longer than initially forecasted, suggesting that EV drivers may spend less on battery repairs and replacements. On average, an electric vehicle battery will cost roughly a third of the vehicle's total value, making it the most…

Q3 Sees EVs Claiming a 9% Share of US Vehicle Sales

With the year drawing to a close, sales data has revealed that battery electric vehicles (BEVs) claimed an almost 9% share of total light-duty vehicle sales in the U.S. in Q3 2024. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), BEVs, plug-in hybrids, and hybrid electric cars added up to 21.1% of new vehicle sales in the third quarter of the year, with fossil fuel vehicles accounting for the rest. Wards Intelligence estimates show that the combined share of BEVs, hybrids, and plug-in hybrids jumped from 19% of all light-duty car sales in the U.S. in Q2 2024 to 21.2%…

Universal EV Charging Set to Be Launched Next Year

Electric vehicle drivers across most major markets are set to say goodbye to EV app folders and time-draining pre-charging procedures thanks to the introduction of a new universal electric vehicle charging set. Launching in 2025, the universal charging set has the support of most of the auto industry’s top EV makers as well as the world's preeminent charging networks. It would allow EV drivers to pull into nearly any EV charging station, plug into any charger, and recharge their cars as easily as a conventional gas-powered car can fill up at any station. This will be a major game changer…

Jaguar’s EVs are Poised for an Unexpected Price Surge

Prices for Jaguar's new lineup of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are poised to rise after the carmaker went through a major rebrand as part of a company-wide effort to transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to luxury electric cars. Jaguar Land Rover CEO Adrian Mardell recently revealed that a single unit of the automaker's new EVs will cost £150,000 ($190,974) rather than the £100,000 ($127,316) Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) announced, making the cars a whopping 50% more expensive than initially expected. Jaguar's rebrand came at a rough time for the auto industry and the nascent electric vehicle market in…

EV Prices Continue Rising in Germany, Causing the Industry to Worry

Automotive industry players and stakeholders are growing increasingly worried about the rising electric vehicle prices in Germany. A recent analysis by the Center of Automotive Management (CAM) has revealed that EV prices in the European nation have been on an upward trend alongside a rise in the number of available EV models, leaving many experts worried about the future of Germany's electric vehicle industry. CAM conducted an in-depth analysis of new EV registrations in Germany that covered segments, EV models, and purchase prices. The analysis also covered China's electric vehicle industry. Researchers found that the number of electric vehicle models…

China’s Global EV Market Share Reaches 76%

Recent data has revealed that China's share of the worldwide electric vehicle market has surged to 76% thanks to robust domestic demand. The East Asian country has made significant investments in its EV sector over the past decade and is now reaping the results in the domestic and foreign markets. Even though import tariffs in major Western markets have risked China’s exposure to foreign electric vehicle markets, strong demand from domestic buyers allowed its global EV industry to rise to 76% in October, the China Passenger Car Association says. Chinese EV makers sold 14.1 million electric vehicle units between January…

Mercedes Reinvents Electric Vehicle Brakes

German automaker Mercedes Benz is on a mission to reinvent electric vehicle brakes. Most modern cars have disk brakes that use a configuration of calipers, brake pads, hydraulic fluid, and pistons to slow the rotation of their wheels via friction and arrest their motion. Other types of vehicle brakes, such as air brakes, band brakes, and drum brakes, also use friction as the primary means of braking. However, while these types of friction-based brakes were developed for internal combustion engine (ICE) cars, electric vehicles are a completely different beast. They are significantly heavier and have greater torque but are uniquely…
