American Firm Unveils Innovative EV Battery That Needs 10 Minutes to Fully Recharge

An American firm has unveiled electric vehicle battery technology that could speed up EV charging rates significantly and allow EV drivers to charge their cars in as little as 10 minutes. New York-based Sionic Energy has designed a novel EV battery that uses a 100% silicon anode rather than the graphite that’s used in most lithium-ion battery configurations to super-boost its energy density.

Sionic Energy developed the battery with the help of silicon battery material manufacturer Group14 Technologies which is set to ramp up production of a silicon-carbon composite dubbed the SCC55. The firm found that silicon anodes increase energy density by 50% without raising battery volume, making it an ideal alternative anode material for high-capacity EV batteries.

Furthermore, the novel battery can recharge in just 10 minutes, a significant improvement from the half an hour to several hours it currently takes to charge modern electric cars. Increased energy density coupled with super fast charging rates makes the new battery a significant step forward in electric vehicle battery technology.

The battery has a lifespan of up to 1,200 cycles in various cell formats, surpassing traditional batteries which typically last between 500 to 1,000 cycles. Furthermore, the new silicon anode battery is so flexible that it can be integrated into lithium battery production processes with extreme ease. Its compatibility with several cell formats will also make it easier for the technology to receive mass adoption.

If automakers adopt the new battery, future electric cars will be high-capacity vehicles capable of charging in just 10 minutes. Such innovations will be key to overcoming the numerous barriers to mass electric vehicle adoption and helping the U.S. electrify its transport sector in time to meet its climate goals.

As the new battery lends itself to mass production quite well, Sionic Energy and Group14 Technologies plan to manufacture silicon-carbon composites for around 200,000 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) annually. The Maltby, Washington-based manufacturer will open a production plant next year to manufacture 4,000 tons of SCC55 and facilitate the mass production of the new silicon anode battery.

With its high capacity and super fast charging capabilities, the new battery could help the nascent electric vehicle industry overcome the range anxiety that has kept multitudes of interested drivers from switching to EVs. EV batteries are a relatively recent innovation and manufacturers are constantly working to make them more energy dense and efficient without increasing their weight. Sionic Energy seems to have covered most of these objectives with its new battery.

When these high energy-density and quick-charging batteries are fitted onto iconic models like Ferrari N.V. (NYSE: RACE), the uptake of electric vehicles could accelerate a lot faster than had initially been anticipated given the recent slump in EV sales in most major markets.
