Do EVs Have Transmissions Like Conventional Cars Do?

Electric vehicles (“EVs”) have one major difference compared to conventional gas-powered cars — they are powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery rather than an internal combustion engine (“ICE”). Eliminating combustion engines and the fossil fuels used to power them makes EVs significantly cleaner than ICE cars. Now that electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular, people are asking questions about EV technology. One common question about zero-emission cars is whether or not they have transmissions like conventional vehicles do. In traditional cars, the transmission’s function is to transfer power from the engine to the driveshaft and the wheels depending on whether…

EV Battery Manufacturers Face Supply Shortfalls Amid Rising Demand

Electric vehicle (“EV”) batteries are the most important component of any EV. They are solely responsible for powering zero-emission EVs and are the most expensive component in the entire vehicle. Most battery electric vehicles on the market rely on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries for power. The thing about EV batteries is that their production requires rare, precious metals such as lithium, cobalt and nickel. However, only a few countries in the world have significant deposits of these minerals, and the mining of these minerals has raised ethical and environmental questions. With electric vehicles getting even more popular amid increased awareness and…

New Vehicle Sales Soar in Colorado as EVs Gain Ground

According to a report from the Colorado Automobile Dealers’ Association, 10% more light vehicles were registered in the state in 2021 in comparison to the numbers for vehicle sales in 2020. Overall, the increase in new car registrations was an impressive 81%, and electric vehicles (“EVs”) took a good slice of that cake. The report indicates that in 2021, Coloradans bought 242,936 new vehicles, an increase from the 220,921 vehicles bought in 2020. The association estimates that the state will register a total of 244,400 new vehicle registrations in 2022. The data also shows that residents of Colorado love their…

EVs Outsell Diesel Vehicles in Europe for First Time

Interest in electric vehicles (“EVs”) has been on the rise for the past couple of years. With several territories across the world looking to replace fossil-fuel-powered vehicles with a cleaner alternative, electric vehicles have emerged as the clear winner. Since they are powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries rather than internal combustion engines, EVs produce zero emissions. But while the technology is extremely popular, electric vehicle sales haven’t been that great in the United States. Europe, on the other hand, has made amazing strides in adopting zero-emission vehicles, so much so that in December, electric vehicles outsold petrol and diesel-powered cars.…

Top US Chip Maker Benefits from Chinese EV Boom

More than a decade after Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) unveiled the Roadster and proved that road-worthy electric vehicles (“EVs”) were more than just a pipe dream, the race for EV supremacy is heating up. Tesla is undoubtedly the world's largest electric vehicle producer, securing more than 70% of the American market for itself and enjoying best-selling status in Europe. However, conquering China, which is the largest vehicle market on the globe, has proven to be a challenge for Tesla and other American automakers. That honor belongs to a variety of Chinese companies. The only American automaker currently benefiting from the Chinese…

ZenAuto Says Searches for EVs Grew 172% in the UK

ZenAuto, a major car leasing firm in the United Kingdom, says that its research shows that between September last year and the start of this year, the number of motorists searching its website for electric vehicles (“EVs”) had soared by 172%. In the same period, similar searches on Google reached a five-year high. The company reveals that this surge can be largely attributed to two major factors: the fuel shortages that hit the country last year, and the UN climate change summit (COP26), which was hosted in Glasgow towards the end of the year. According to poll conducted by ZenAuto,…

Volkswagen Determined to Double EV Sales in China

Despite being the world’s largest vehicle market, China has been notoriously difficult for Western carmakers to penetrate. The electric vehicle (“EV”) revolution has presented an attractive opportunity, allowing carmakers to enter the Chinese market with relatively good results. Volkswagen AG, for instance, partnered with Shanghai, China-based SAIC Motor and FAW Group in Changchun, Jilin, China to build the ID electric vehicle series. The German automaker is looking to double sales in China this year after selling 70,625 of its ID electric cars in 2021. This was nearly 10,000 EVs short of Volkswagen’s goal to sell 80,000 to 100,000 electric vehicles…

Oregon Doubles EV Rebates for Low-Income Households

In order to entice more people to switch to electric vehicles, the state of Oregon has revised its EV rebates program and doubled the amount of money that motorists are eligible to receive once they buy either a used or new electric vehicle. This move puts the state among the top in the country in terms of rebates issued to buyers of electric vehicles. The Charge Ahead Program covers households whose combined income is in the range of $51,000 to $251,000, subject to how many people are in each household. Previously, the households that fall within this annual income bracket…

US Registers Record Sales of Hybrid EVs

Battery electric vehicles (“BEVs”) are all the rage right now. While electric vehicles (“EVs”) may not be filling up American roads just yet, most automakers have plans to electrify their lineups, and at least 23% of Americans are considering buying an electric car as their next vehicle. With the Unites States looking to cut its carbon emissions in a bid to arrest climate change, battery-electric cars are poised to take over our roads. They do not use fossil fuels and produce zero emissions at the tailpipe, making them perfect for a carbon-neutral economy. But while everyone has had their eyes…
