The 2022 Consumer Electronics Show was every car enthusiast’s dream. Running from Jan. 5–8, 2022, the show featured some of the latest technologies different companies had to offer. With electric vehicles (“EVs”) being among the most talked-about technology right now, they featured heavily during the show. Several countries across the world are looking to reduce their carbon emissions, and tackling transportation is the first step; passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks accounted for 29% of total carbon emissions in 2019.
By replacing fossil fuel cars with zero-emission electric vehicles, we can significantly cut down on our greenhouse gas emissions. One company, however, took the concept of being green and eco-friendly to the extreme. German automaker Mercedes debuted a new concept electric car that features a completely vegan interior. Dubbed the Vision EQXX, the electric car features a completely animal-free interior made using cactus and mushroom leather, bio-based vegan silk and bamboo.
This unique design has allowed Mercedez to reduce the Vision EQXX’s carbon footprint by 50%. To achieve this feat, Mercedes used two kinds of vegan leather: Desserto leather, made from the prickly pear or nopal cactus was used to upholster the steering wheel, middle console, and seats while Mylo mushroom leather, developed by material solutions company Bolt Threads using mycelium, which is sourced from mushrooms, was also used to upholster the seats.
The concept EV’s carpets were made from 100% bamboo fiber, and its car door pulls are coated in Biosteel biobased vegan silk developed by AMSilk. Furthermore, the interior door trim and the outer steering wheel are covered in material made from recycled materials. This includes a polyester textile made from recycled plastic bottles.
It’s hard to believe that the gorgeous, futuristic interior is completely vegan. Urich Scheberl, AMSilk’s chief executive officer, says his firm is proud to partner with Mercedes to “provide sustainable interior design solutions.”
Expected to hit the open market in 2024, the coupe-like sedan will have a range of 620 miles per charge. It will also feature solar cells along the roof to charge up a secondary battery that will be used to power ancillary vehicle systems. Mercedez isn’t the first carmaker to move away from leather interiors; last year, Volvo unveiled the C40 Recharge, an EV with a completely leather-free interior. The Swedish company plans on selling only electric cars with leather-free interiors by the year 2030.
Volkswagen, BMW and Audi have also looked into leather alternatives for their interiors. Tesla, which kicked off the electric vehicle movement with the Roadster more than a decade ago, has been offering a vegan interior option since 2015. Now considered a leader in the ecofriendly interior game, Tesla now offers this option with all of its EV models.
These developments show that as more players sech as Mullen Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ: MULN) gain a bigger market share, the vehicle models that are released will continue to feature lots of improvements to meet the evolving expectations of the clientele.
