Tempering Technique Could Allow Tesla Cybertruck Owners to Alter Its Color

We were all surprised when the first images of the Tesla Cybertruck came out. It was new, it was different, and we had never seen anything like it before. Then again, the EV and green energy industry in general is a relatively novel industry filled with pioneers and trailblazers. Since then, the world has waited for the arrival of the controversially designed EV with bated breath, excitedly gobbling any new details about the Cybertruck.

It has now emerged that although the Tesla Cybertruck isn’t likely to be available in any other color than its natural steel color, the steel can be heated to change the body’s color. When the vehicle was first unveiled, the world was shocked by its exoskeleton body made of exposed steel “for ultimate durability passenger protection”. While the lack of stamped body panels helps eliminate dents, minor damage, and long term corrosion, it limits color options.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk suggested that the EV maker could offer the Cybertruck in different colors and even hinted at matte black but later said that the electric pickup would have to be wrapped for it to be offered in different colors. After being asked by a Twitter user if the Cybertruck in white oxide could be “a thing”,” Musk said it was “not impossible.” He late confirmed that the Cybertruck’s cold-rolled steel body could indeed be heated to get different colors through a technique called ‘tempering’ when a user asked.

“Some types of steel change color when tempered, does that apply to cold-rolled stainless steel too? Would look pretty sick/unique if Cybertruck could be torched using not-a-flamethrower,”@flcnhvy said to Musk, who simply replied “Yes.”

Tesla plans to bring the Cybertruck to the market it late 2021, starting with the two higher-end versions, but it is unclear if this is something that would be done aftermarket or if Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) could offer a solution of its own. This could potentially allow owners to choose from a limited range of colors. A faint yellow could be achieved by temperatures of around 176-degrees Celsius while 337-degrees would result in a light blue. This would probably have to take place during the manufacturing process due to the extreme temperatures required to make it work.

Tesla hasn’t yet finalized the Cybertruck’s exoskeleton material, but it will be comprised of some type of alloy. According to Musk, the alloy the company used for its first electric pickup will change, and the company won’t be using the 30x series cold-rolled steel. This truck is one EV to look out for!
