China has launched the largest, purely electric commercial container ship in the world, cementing its claim as one of the globe’s most dominant players in the rapidly expanding electric vehicle segment. At a whopping 419 feet, the commercial container ship exchanges the traditional fuel tank with a massive battery pack capable of powering 300 electric vehicles.
The ship was designed with battery swap features that allow the onboard battery pack to be swapped with a fresh replacement when the container ship docks, meaning the electric ship can essentially ‘recharge’ in just a couple of minutes.
Beijing’s decision to design and launch an all-electric container ship feeds into its long-term renewable energy and climate change mitigation goals. Global shipping runs entirely on fossil fuels and generates nearly 3% of worldwide CO2 emissions, and with China owning a large chunk of the world’s container ships, the Asian powerhouse is responsible for a decent portion of these emissions.
Electrifying its shipping container fleet would enable China to cut its shipping-related emissions and potentially gain a stronghold on another sub-segment of the EV industry. If such electric ships become popular, port cities may even be able to enjoy cleaner and higher quality air in the future.
With the shipping sector fully reliant on greenhouse gas-producing fossil fuels, port cities typically bear the brunt of the industry’s emissions, absorbing harmful particulates like sulfur each time a container ship docks. Given the integral role global shipping plays in keeping the global economy running, electrifying it would undoubtedly help to arrest pollution-induced climate change on a global scale.
However, such a vision would take decades, major policy support, and significant investment to achieve. There are around 6,000 to 7,300 active container ships in the world and China owns more than 1,000 active ships.
The Ningyuan Dian Kun represents a small but still monumental step towards reducing the shipping sector’s reliance on fossil fuels. Launched on April 15 from the Port of Ningbo-Zhoushan to Jiaxing, the 419-foot container ship has a top speed of 11.5 knots (13 mph) and a capacity of 742 standard containers. Ningbo Ocean Shipping commissioned Jiangxi Jiangxin to construct the Ningyuan Dian Kun and the China Classification Society classed the vessel.
At a cumulative 20,000 kilowatt-hours, ten standard battery containers power twin 875-kilowatt permanent-magnet motors. The battery containers can either be swapped out with charged batteries or recharged via high-voltage power at the dock.
Solar panels also feed energy into the ship, primarily covering hotel load and lights, to reduce the strain on the batteries. Furthermore, the ship has autonomous tools such as weather sensing, live panoramic monitoring, and collision-avoidance alerts coupled with seamless switching from self-navigation to manual control.
China’s foray into electric container ships is likely to be seen as a long-overdue step by companies like Massimo Group (NASDAQ: MAMO) that have long held a firm belief that watercraft of different sizes and end-uses ought to be fully electrified.
