Solar EVs Could Play Pivotal Role in Electrification Transition

In the coming years, solar-powered electric vehicles could soon be available in the United States and Europe. Three automobile manufacturers — Sonor Motors in Germany, Aptera Motors in California and Light Year in the Netherlands — are actualizing this reality.

The solar vehicles are built to use the sun for a few extra miles on sunny days. In addition, they are integrated with rechargeable lithium-based batteries, which make them functionally identical to electric vehicles for long-distance drivers. However, if commuting or taking a short drive, one can rely on the sun’s power for the entire journey for free.

The production of Sion of Sonor Motors is anticipated to commence in Europe by mid-2023 as reservations have already started to be made. Because its 190-mile-range battery and 465 half-solar cells are housed on the outside of the vehicle , the Sion is able to charge the battery using the power of the sun, makes it a perfect vehicle for commuters.

The Zippy 3-wheeled Aptera vehicle boasts aerodynamic features, two seats and motors mounted inside its wheels, with a range of up to 1,000 miles plus built-in solar cells, all of which ensure its efficiency. The solar range increases by around 30 miles daily from the existing 250 miles. Next year, the company will begin production of this car in the U.S.

Additionally, Lightyear 0 incorporates in-wheel drive motors and appears to have aerodynamic qualities, much like the three-wheeled Aptera Motors car. Thanks to its slim shape and five seats, it has a more unusual appearance for a vehicle. The lithium-ion battery in this car can travel 390 miles on a single charge. It also gets an additional 20 miles or so with solar power because it recharges whenever the roof absorbs sunlight.

According to Lex Hoefsloot, consumers are hesitant to switch to electric vehicles because of inadequate charging infrastructure and driving-range concerns. Solar-electric vehicles are cost free because they are powered by the sun, thereby addressing these concerns. However, it might take some time before other manufacturers start producing solar-electric vehicles because adding solar panels to heavier, larger cars might not produce enough power to make up for the additional expense, regardless of how small the additional cost can be.

Efficiency has proven to be the only way to increase the range without purchasing a large battery. Since the top solar panel is now only 22% efficient, extended drives cannot be supported by the solar vehicles that are currently on the market. However, as technology advances, windows may be converted into solar panels using solar glasses, enabling future long-distance travel of up to 100 miles.

It would be interesting to hear what industry leaders such as Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) have to say about the chances of solar EVs claiming a sizeable market share as vehicle electrification grows around the world.
