Muscle Car Conversion to EVs Emerges as Growing Trend

Vintage trucks and cars’ conversion to electric vehicles is possible these days, thanks to Kevin Erickson and a small, rapidly growing network of engineers, tinkerers and businesspeople throughout the nation. Even though the converted cars face ridicule from some who claim they resemble some golf-pusher kind of vehicles, fully electric converters are turning into a common norm. With the improvement of battery technology in place, the universe appears to be embracing climate change by shifting to greener energy.

The electric conversion of vintage vehicles is “definitely a trend,” according to vice president of car culture for Hagerty, Jonathan Klinger, despite the general lack of sufficient research carried out on the matter. An online survey of around quarter a million self-described car lovers in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom was carried out in May by a company from Michigan. At least 1% of them had either completely or partially converted their vintage vehicles to have electric drive systems.

The findings showed that performance improvement, accelerating quickly, having fun and taking on a project that would be difficult to complete were the most common motivations for conversion. In addition, environmental and emissions concerns were also common; some 25% of the respondents were in favor of converting classic cars to electric cars.

Klinger, who owns a number of classic cars, asserted that he does not believe that internal combustion motors will entirely be replaced by electric ones, particularly when it comes to the historical relevance of the vehicle. Despite the fact that Ford as well as General Motors have produced or intend to produce standalone electric engines made and sold to owners of vintage vehicles, the co-owner of Inspire EV, Sean Moudry, claims that it is still a challenging and costly project for a casual auto enthusiast to delve into. As a result, the adoption of EV conversions will take close to 20 years. But according to Mike Spagnola, president and chief executive officer of the SEMA, a trade organization that concentrates on automotive spare parts, this reality might arrive sooner than anticipated.

Spagnola claims that in the early days of converting a vintage, the converters would choose a wrecked Tesla, remove everything from the car and then figure out how to put it back together in a design that would suit the vehicle they wanted to build it into.

But today, many companies are producing unified components and rechargeable batteries that are small and potent, along with many other inventions. They are also making wiring parts that are simple to install. Others even go as far as constructing frames for the cars so that customers can simply place the vintage car’s body on the platform’s top.

It could turn out that these muscle-car conversions create a buzz among members of the public, leading to a faster adoption of the electric vehicles produced by various manufacturers such as Fisker Inc. (NYSE: FSR).
