Ford Opens EV Production Facility in Germany

This week marked the official opening of Ford’s Cologne EV facility, a cutting-edge production plant in Germany where the company will create its next generation of passenger electric vehicles for millions of customers in Europe. The Ford Cologne facility was established in 1930; however, in 2021 Ford announced that it would be converted into an electric vehicle manufacturing hub at a cost of $1 billion. The plant’s renovation is currently described by the company as part of a $2 billion investment.

Ford anticipates that the Cologne electric vehicle facility will produce 250,000 electric cars each year. In 2022, Ford stated that it had plans to provide seven entirely new electric vehicle types for Europeans by 2024, which would include three vehicles for passengers and four for commercial purposes. By 2026, the company aims to sell more than 600,000 electric vehicles in Europe as a continent, as it works to reach an annual production rate of 2 million electric vehicles across the globe by the close of 2026.

After the successful release of the F-150 Lightning, E-Transit and Mustang Mach-E, Ford just introduced the electric Explorer as its four EV worldwide; the new EV is going to be the maiden electric automobile manufactured in the Cologne facility. This will be followed by a sports crossover as the second electric vehicle to be manufactured in the same facility.

Built on a site of 125 hectares, the Cologne Electric Center will serve as the company’s first zero-carbon manufacturing plant. The company plans to become carbonfree throughout all of its operations in Europe by 2035, including its facilities, suppliers and logistics.

According to Bill Ford, executive chairman of Ford, the Cologne electric vehicle facility will be among the most effective and environmentally friendly facilities in the entire industry. Olaf Scholz, the government chancellor, stated that the EV Center at Ford’s facility in Cologne signals a new beginning and represents the largest investment in Ford’s history. He added that it is wonderful news for Cologne, the German auto sector and electronic mobility at large.

The Gigafactory for Tesla in Berlin, which became operational in March 2022, is the apparent competitor for Ford’s German electric vehicle assembly facility.

The Cologne plant has created some legendary vehicles, such as the Capri, Model A and Granada; however, it is currently transitioning into one of the company’s most advanced facilities. For instance, it has autonomous transportation systems and self-learning technology.

According to Martin Sander, Ford is again revolutionizing the vehicle production industry by applying cutting-edge technology to develop fully connected cars with complete connectivity and software definition in order to satisfy the demand for “emission-free transportation” from their consumers.

Ford’s new era in Europe officially begins with the opening of the Cologne EV facility, and it is game on for other players such as NIO Inc. (NYSE: NIO) that wish to grab a sizeable share of the lucrative European EV market.
