How Tesla Plans on Accommodating Increased Demand for Chargers

With Tesla’s move to open its charging network to Ford and GM, the rest of the auto industry may be obliged to follow suit. However, it is currently unknown which of the auto manufacturers might collaborate with Ford and GM. Presently, there are two primary kinds of charging plugs for electric vehicles: Tesla’s NACS and CCS, which most other auto manufacturers utilize.

Tesla controls the most extensive network across America, with 17,000 electrical plugs. Faster charging is possible at Tesla’s charging points than at the majority of stations. Additionally, these stations frequently have higher reliability and are located in safer areas near important thoroughfares. Beginning next year, electric vehicles from Ford and General Motors will be allowed to use Tesla’s 12,000 Supercharger stations, according to the arrangements they have made.

In the United States, Tesla leads in the sale of electric vehicles, followed by General Motors and then Ford. CleanTechnica’s data shows that Tesla sold more than 500,000 cars in 2022. In North America, Ford intends to be able to produce 2 million electric vehicles annually, while General Motors envisions producing 1 million. Other auto makers such as Hyundai, Volkswagen and Kia are also anticipated to announce their adoption of Tesla’s NACS soon. The implication of this is that 500,000 to more than 6 million vehicles (almost a dozen times more) are sold annually and are going to share Tesla’s superchargers for both their trips and routine charges.

Tesla intends to employ three different strategies to satisfy the significantly higher charging demands.

Boost the speed of charging. With version 2 and version 3 power upped from 150 kilowatts to 250 kilowatts, respectively, most Tesla Superchargers have recently reached their maximum speed, and it appears that version 4 power will climb to 600 kilowatts. As a result, a similar quantity of chargers will be able to handle twice as many vehicles, halving or at least shortening the standard charge duration. Future autos could charge in as little as 10 minutes utilizing a version 4 supercharger, as a version 3 charger frequently takes roughly 20 minutes to complete the charge, whereas a version 2 charger takes around 35 minutes.

Install additional chargers at the current sites. The majority of Tesla’s first-generation Superchargers contained six to eight stalls, although the company has been expanding the number of stalls in high-traffic regions by two or three times or perhaps more. In California, at Harris Ranch, 164 stalls are reportedly scheduled to be constructed.

Adding more locations: While it is currently possible for superchargers to be as far apart as 80 kilometers or sometimes absent altogether on certain roads, we anticipate seeing a supercharger every 20 kilometers on the majority of interstate roads within three years. In certain areas, rather than constructing a single huge supercharger with 100 stalls, it would be more sensible to construct two separate supercharging stations, each having 50 stalls. Additionally, Superchargers can be installed in residential areas.

The onus is now on other startups, such as Fisker Inc. (NYSE: FSR), to decide which connector standard they follow in a bid to get more of their models to their target market segments.
