Cities Resort to Online Electric Car Education amid the Pandemic

Most developed countries are in a race to achieve net-zero emissions by the next decade or two. One aspect of achieving zero emissions is by phasing out internal combustion vehicles for electric cars. Though the electric vehicle (“EV”) industry has made a lot of progress in a few short years, it still has a long way to go before widespread EV adoption. EVs run on clean energy, produce zero emissions, and are generally cheaper to run and maintain than conventional vehicles, but customers have been wary of switching to green energy due to a few legitimate concerns and just a little ignorance.

Consequently, plenty of cities across the U.S. have launched efforts to increase EV adoption. This includes many of the 25 cities participating in the Bloomberg Philanthropies American Cities Climate Challenge. Many consumer concerns about the viability of driving an electric vehicle are valid, such as high purchase price and spotty charging infrastructure. Additionally, many consumers just aren’t aware of EVs and the benefits they afford users. These are just some of the issues cities have tried to address during the coronavirus pandemic.

In St. Petersburg, for instance, the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (“SACE”) Driving on Sunshine campaign had been offering first-hand test driving throughout Florida and the Southeast since 2019. When the coronavirus pandemic struck, the campaign went online. The SACE campaign started offering “virtual ride-along” experiences by video as well as live question and answer sessions with interested drivers. The virtual ride-along, as well as a new video series, “EVs are for EVeryone” highlights the fuel and maintenance savings EV drivers can enjoy.

This week, the city of Indianapolis offered a two-day workshop on workplace charging for Indiana employers and municipalities. For people who drive to work, workplace charging is ideal as their EVs can be charging all day as they work. In partnership with its Clean Cities Coalition and Forth Mobility, the workshop used a new platform that mimics in-person conference experience by offering networking opportunities as well as an “exhibitors’ hall” where participants could connect with vendors and local installers.

The City of San Antonio Office of Sustainability also held a series of online events based on EV basics, the EV landscape in Texas, and alternative electric mobility options like electric buses, trucks, and bikes in partnership with the Alamo Area Council of Governments and Forth Mobility. The event featured EV owners discussing their vehicles and walking people through the basics of charging.

Most of these cities have also launched programs to build a network of charging stations and to subsidize the cost of new electric vehicles. In concert, these efforts will go a long way in increasing the number of electric vehicles on America’s roads. Such an outcome would allow electric vehicle manufacturers like Nikola Corporation (NASDAQ: NKLA) to attain their sales targets in quick time.
