A recent review of the German automobile market has found that electric vehicle prices are declining in Germany and the broader European market. According to joint research conducted by the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI) and the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), battery electric vehicle (BEV) prices have fallen by nearly 20% over the past half-decade.
Furthermore, BEVs sold in European markets like Germany have steadily improved in range and performance, and potential buyers now have a lot more EV models to choose from. Researchers reviewed tens of thousands of vehicle data points from half a dozen auto market segments ranging from luxury models to compact city vehicles.
Although sticker prices suggest that electric vehicles aren’t becoming more affordable, with the average cost of a new electric vehicle in the German market jumping from $42,000 at the start of the decade to $60,500 last year, the research shows that average electric vehicle prices have indeed fallen.
The main reason modern EVs seem so expensive compared to prior models is that the segment now hosts more premium and mid-size electric cars. Before 2022, most automakers prioritized smaller sedan-sized electric cars, which cost less to construct and are cheaper than mid-size and larger EVs.
Today, a whopping 73% of electric vehicles in Germany’s vehicle market are upper-mid-range and mid-range models, raising average EV prices nationwide. However, when researchers compared vehicles of similar make, they found that German drivers are actually paying less for their EV purchases today compared to 2020.
After accounting for vehicle specification improvements such as battery size, motor output, and driving range, and adjusting for inflation, the researchers found that purchase costs of comparable EVs had declined by 18% over the past 5 years.
Interestingly, comparable gas-powered cars became 2% more costly during the same period. The findings show that when electric vehicles of a similar make are compared, it becomes demonstrably clear that EV prices in Germany have dropped through the decade.
Falling battery prices are largely responsible for bringing down electric vehicle prices. The study notes that EV battery prices fell by approximately 21% to 24% worldwide from 2020 to 2025, with the rate rising to 35% to 37% when adjusted for inflation. Passing some of these savings on to consumers has allowed carmakers to price their electric cars more affordably.
Improvements in battery technology have also resulted in increased average range over the study period, and the researchers posit that battery costs will continue to fall due to increased efficiency and reduced manufacturing costs.
It would be interesting to undertake a similar analysis of the cost trajectory of current models from electric vehicle makers like Rivian Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ: RIVN) from outside the EU region to compare how their pricing has evolved over the same duration.
