Why EVs Are Heavier Than Conventional Vehicles

It’s common knowledge that modern vehicles, despite all the advancements that have been made in both hardware and software, are a less sturdy than the cars of old. You’ve probably seen pictures of car crashes where an old pickup truck or other such vehicle stands completely unscathed amid the wreckage of a modern vehicle. Electric vehicles (“EVs”), by virtue of being much heavier than their petrol- and diesel-powered counterparts, represent a similar risk to other drivers whenever they hit the roads.

Unlike conventional vehicles that are powered by internal combustion engines, electric vehicles ditch the fossil-fuel-powered engines for rechargeable lithium-ion battery packs. Think of the small battery in your phone or your laptop, only an electric vehicle needs lots and lots of these individual modules to run. While such battery packs allow EVs to achieve zero emissions at the tailpipe, they weigh quite a bit and as a result, electric vehicles tend to weigh more than the average conventional vehicle.

The Hummer EV made by General Motors, for instance, is a beast with its Edition 1 model weighing in excess of 9,000 pounds. This is because it has a large battery array to provide additional power and range, causing just a single model of the large 830-horsepower EV to weigh as much as three Honda Civics. The Hummer EV’s massive battery pack grants it more than 350 miles of range on a single charge, with the vehicle being able to accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in only three seconds in a special driving mode.

This extra weight seems to make electric vehicles safer in case of car crashes. According to insurance claims data, individuals in EVs are less prone to suffer injury in an accident that involves a similar internal combustion engine vehicle. With some claims saying that drivers in hybrids are also safer, it seems that the added weight of a large battery pack and — in the case of hybrids — a metal engine under the hood, protects the occupants during crashes.

Also worth noting is that the vehicles that get into crashes with these heavier EVs risk suffering greater damage. For instance, if the new GMC Hummer EV were to crash into a gas-powered SUV of similar size, the occupants of the SUV would likely suffer greater injury compared to those in the EV. Consequently, automakers have been working on minimizing the likelihood of crashes to keep both EV drivers as well as other drivers safe. The Hummer EV has been equipped with many collision avoidance capabilities, including pedestrian detection and lane-keeping capabilities, says General Motors spokesman Mikhael Farah.

The safety features of many EV models, including the all-electric light duty commercial vehicles manufactured by ev Transportation Services Inc., make them a favorite for applications such as security, parking enforcement and property maintenance.
