Volkswagen Develops Superior Drive System, Motor for Electric Vehicles

Volkswagen says that for all its electric cars, it is developing a new, more powerful, and effective engine and drive framework. It claims that thanks to increased efficiency, its new APP 550 propulsion system will enhance the performance of batteries in rear-wheel drive vehicles as well as increase their range. According to Volkswagen, by the end of this year, the first vehicles with the modern 210 kW/280 horsepower electric drive framework will be delivered.

The MEB platform, which is the foundation for all company-branded ID vehicles, will continue to be used as the design base for this new drive system, Karsten Bennewitz stated in a press release issued by the company. Bennewitz claimed that they had to build a new drive, which was capable of significantly improving efficiency and performance despite the constraints imposed on them by each other.

Besides greater performance, the APP 550’s powertrain also has more torque based on the gear ratio of the vehicle, with up to 550 Nm405 lbft of torque. With an increased stator with a higher number of usable windings and wider wire cross sections, the significant increase in torque is capable of providing great power at both low speeds and at higher speeds. The rotor has strong magnetic materials installed in it, increasing its load capability. In order to cope with the increased torque, the drive has been strengthened as well.

The more powerful and efficient inverter that has recently been designed can provide the increased electrical current required by a propulsion system whose working software makes sure the system runs effectively. This implies that in different load scenarios, the timing and modulation techniques used to generate asynchronous current for an electric motor are capable of making it work more effectively.

It gets hotter as the power and current increase. Volkswagen has improved a range of components within the power train, such as the temperature regulation system, with a view to increasing electric drive efficiency. The APP 550 is equipped with a cooling system that uses less energy and does not use an electric oil pump. Because of the gear wheels in the gearbox, as well as specially designed components that are used to deliver and distribute oil, the engine’s cooling circuit can mop up heat from the drive system. On the outside of the stator, a heat sink that uses water cooling is mounted.

Volkswagen’s components facility in Kassel, Germany, will produce the drive system composed of a gear box, stator and rotor. In the world of EVs, this is interesting news. The latest technologies are being launched regularly, and drivers who need basic transport rather than larger tour buses are also being taken into account.

The EV industry is evolving rapidly, and one can only expect that as time goes by, other industry players such as Nikola Corporation (NASDAQ: NKLA) will also introduce their own innovations aimed at giving their offerings a competitive edge on the market.
