Tapping into Investment Opportunities in EV Industry

The electric vehicle (“EV”) industry represents a significant opportunity for investors. Transportation accounts for 28.2% of all greenhouse emissions, and several governments are set to phase out traditional vehicles over the next two decades. As such, the nascent electric vehicle sector is set to enjoy immense growth in the coming years. So how can investors get a slice of the pie?

Invest in established EV makers. Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA), the most prominent EV manufacturer, currently has a market cap of more than $400 billion, which some say is overvalued. Still, the innovative company is the dominant player in the EV space, and the assumption is it will continue dominating the space. Additionally, established automakers such as General Motors (NYSE: GM) and Ford (NYSE: F) have waded into the EV space with their own offerings. GM has committed to 23 new EVs by 2023; Ford is planning on introducing the Mustang Mach-E as well as an all-electric version of its best-selling F150 pickup.

Invest in EV start-ups. Tesla isn’t the only player in the EV game. Although the firm has been a dominant force in the EV industry for a decade, the past year has seen several EV start-ups go public, mostly using Special Purpose Acquisition Companies (“SPACS”). A SPAC is a blank check company, or in simple terms, a mountain of cash provided by investors to buy a lucrative company within a specified amount of time. These companies merge with EV start-ups that are having a hard time finding capital and provide the capital they need.

Investing in EV battery makers would also be good idea. The EV industry’s growth is inexplicably tied to the battery sector. In fact, the future of the EV industry is very much dependent on the development of powerful, efficient and affordable batteries, a feat battery makers are intent on achieving. QuantumScape, for instance, is a new battery technology company that’s developing a new generation of lithium-metal batteries that have a significantly higher energy density than current lithium-ion batteries.

Romeo Power, another battery solution, is focusing on battery pack construction and battery-management systems (“BMS”), both critical software and hardware that determine EV range, battery life and battery reliability. The firm went public through the SPAC Acquisition Corp.

The EV industry has opened up an entirely new world for investors. From established EV makers, automakers dabbling in the EV space, as well as start-ups to battery makers and even mining battery components such as lithium, there are a plenty of investment opportunities for investors.

One interesting player in the electric vehicle space is ev Transportation Services Inc. This Massachusetts-based company specializes in not only designing and developing lightweight commercial fully electric vehicles, but it also manufactures them.
