Study Shows EV Are Suited for Nearly 8 in 10 Fleet Trips

A new study by Volkswagen reveals the number of journeys an electric vehicle (“EV”) will need to make before recharging. This study relied on insights from more than 720,000 journeys and comes after many other reports have tried to show how car and van journeys match up to the range of an electric car.

The research was done by the Volkswagen Financial Services Fleet (VWFS Fleet), which relied on data on travels covering almost 6.5 million miles.  The data was analyzed to help fleet drivers find out the fuel type that was the most suitable as well as cost friendly.

The mid-range Volkswagen ID.3 EV was used as the benchmark for the study. VWFS Fleet broke down the assessment of the telematics data into different aspects, including average speed, maximum distance covered, average distances, journey distances and dwell times. In total, the fleet used data from more than 723,000 individual journeys to find which type of car would be suitable for fleet drivers.

The research findings showed that 74% of the fleet drivers would replace their current cars with an EV now. Meanwhile, 2% of the drivers would be advised to switch to a plug-in hybrid in direct opposition to 21% of fleet divers who were advised to use a petrol vehicle. As for drivers advised to use a diesel vehicle, only 3% would qualify under the criteria used by the research team, a number that is expected to dwindle as improvements in EV ranges are noted and costs continue to drop.

In a previous 2019 report, the Volkswagen e-Golf was used as the benchmark. It found that most drivers who had longer journeys would be advised to use a vehicle with an internal combustion engine. It shows that 11% would be recommended to switch to an electric vehicle while 37% of the divers were grouped in a Potential EV category.

Immense improvements in the driving range of EVs have resulted in an increase in fleet journeys. Between charges, mid-range electric cars can cover about 350 miles. As a result, more drivers can now easily swap their cars for electric cars.

In the past analysis, 1 in 10 drivers would be suited to using an EV for their journeys. The latest generation of electric car models has been modified to be more driver friendly. According to Mike Coulton, the fleet product and policy manager of VWFS Fleet, EVs such as the mid-range ID.3 have a range of 260 miles while the Tesla Model 3 has a range of 360 miles.

Despites circumstances where carbon emission vehicles may be needed, the switch to EV will be beneficial to the environment as well as save on operating costs. As the 2030 UK ban on diesel and petrol cars is fast approaching, Coulton suggests that now is the perfect time for businesses to modify their fleets. Such modifications of fleet composition would mean that companies such as NIO Inc. (NYSE: NIO) could make plenty of sales over the coming decades as the sector grows.
