Study Finds EVs Involved in Few Fires

According to a new study conducted by AutoInsuranceEZ, electric vehicles (“EVs”) were involved in few automobile fires when compared to hybrid vehicles and fossil-fueled cars. The researchers used data on car fires and compared that data to the information available regarding the number of vehicles bought in the United States.

Relying on statistics provided by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (car sales data) and the National Transportation Safety Board (car fires registered), the AutoInsuranceEZ analysts found that for every 100,000 hybrid cars sold, there were approximately 3,475 fire incidents reported while for every 100,000 fossil-fueled vehicles sold, approximately 1,530 fire events were reported. In contrast, just 25 fire incidents were documented for every 100,000 electric vehicles sold. The findings were from statistics covering the year 2020.

These findings show that EVs pose a small fire risk when compared to other types of vehicles on the roads. This seems logical given that EVs don’t require any combustion in order to generate energy, while gasoline vehicles depend on combustion within their engines in order to have any power.

The team of researchers also wanted to find out how the different types of vehicles fared with regard to the number of recalls issued by manufacturers due to fire risks. For this, the analysts turned to the information available at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The team specifically focused on data for 2020. They found that fossil-fueled vehicles topped the list of highest number of recalls resulting from fire risks while electric vehicles were second. The data showed that hybrids were third on the list.

These findings are proof that while electric vehicle fires garner a lot of publicity, they aren’t as common as the media would want the public to believe. The misconception that the batteries in EVs make these vehicles more dangerous when compared to fossil-fueled vehicles isn’t true, at least as far as the existing scientific data is concerned.

This is reassuring news to the motoring public since a lower fire risk means that people will be less jittery about acquiring and owning EVs. Other studies have indicated that EVs are indeed safer, especially given the heavy weight and location of their batteries. This weight makes the vehicle more stable on the road due to its lower center of gravity. The lower center of gravity is as a result of the batteries being lined on the floor of the vehicle.

With such positive findings about the safety of electric vehicles, things can only look up for sector players such as Kandi Technologies Group Inc. (NASDAQ: KNDI) if they play their cards well and keep bringing to market vehicle models that appeal to different market segments.
