More Carmakers Are Betting on Extended-Range EVs

A growing number of electric vehicle companies are placing their bets on extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) to address one of the main barriers to electric vehicle adoption: range anxiety. Due to the relative scarcity of public charging stations in the U.S., American EV owners have to plan long trips carefully and meticulously to avoid running out of power mid-trip.

Outside hubs like California where most of the country’s public charging infrastructure is concentrated, long EV road trips are practically impossible. EREVs could solve this issue by eliminating the dependence on public chargers during long trips.

With gas prices at record highs due to conflicts in the Middle East, and conventional EVs held back by limited range, carmakers like Ford, Ram, Genesis, Jeep, and Hyundai are betting on EREVs to reach drivers who want the EV experience but don’t want to rely on public charging infrastructure. Most of these companies plan to debut an EREV by the start of 2029.

Unlike a traditional electric car, an EREV features a gas engine alongside a big battery, hypothetically granting it the benefits of both an EV and combustion-engine vehicle. AutoPacific’s manager of product and consumer insights Robby DeGraff says extended-range electric vehicles represent the next generation of this hybrid powertrain, especially for Americans who typically spend more time behind the wheel due to the country’s massive geography.

The electric motors propel the vehicles while the gas engine combusts fuel and spins a generator to produce energy when the battery is depleted. This makes EREVs suitable for both short drives and long trips; a driver can use electricity for short drives but switch to gasoline when they go on long trips or tow heavy loads. With 120-150 miles of battery power and an extra 100 miles using gasoline, EREVs could finally make long electric vehicle trips in the U.S. a feasible option.

Since EREVs largely operate in the large-vehicle segment, they have plenty of room for a huge battery, fuel tank, and engine. They align with SUVs and big trucks, which are the types of cars Americans tend to purchase.

Telemetry’s vice president of market research Sam Abuelsamid says that American demand for oversized vehicles, coupled with rising fuel prices, offers a real opportunity for extended-range electric vehicles.

Ram predicts that the Ram 1500 REV, with 145 miles of electric range, 690 miles of total range, and 647 electric motor horsepower, will land on dealership floors in H1 2027. Hyundai also expects an early 2027 launch, while Ford recently announced that it will release an EREV version of the discontinued Ford F150.

It remains to be seen whether other American electric vehicle makers like Rivian Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ: RIVN) will also consider adding EREVs to their lineups over the coming years.
