Kia to Introduce EV That Needs Only 20 Minutes to Charge

After more than a century, it seems that the age of the internal combustion engine is drawing to a close. Several countries around the world have pledged to replace their fleets with zero-emission electric vehicles (“EV”) over the next two decades, making significant investments in EV technology and public charging infrastructure. However, relatively long charge times coupled with range anxiety still remain a hindrance to widespread EV adoption, and South Korean automaker Kia has unveiled a new electric vehicle that cuts down charging times down to a mere 20 minutes.

The 2022 Kia EV6, which is the South Korean-based company’s first completely electric EV, will be built on the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) Kia Motors will use on all its new electric vehicle models. The electric SUV has an estimated driving range of 300 miles on a single charge, similar to the Tesla Model Y performance version. Thanks to an 800-volt system, the Kia EV6 will be able to charge from 10% to 80% in just under 20 minutes, a feat that few other electric vehicles can manage.

Kia will offer different versions of its new electric SUV with two different battery capacities, between 167 and 567 horsepower, and either all or rear-wheel drive. The all-wheel-drive model will be equipped with either 313 and 576 horsepower and the larger 77.4kWh battery pack. On the other hand, the rear wheel version of the Kia EV6 will have only 167 horsepower and the smaller 58kWh battery pack. According to Kia, the 313 horsepower version will be able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds while the more powerful 576 horsepower version will be able to go from 0 to 60mph in just under 3.5 seconds.

To take advantage of the electric SUV’s fast charging capabilities, drivers will have to plug it into a 350kW fast charger. Kia estimates the EV6 will be able to add 70 miles of range on such a charger in under five minutes. On a Level 2 outlet, Kia’s new EV will go from 10% to 100% in seven hours.

Kia is planning on making major investments in electrification, even changing its name from Kia Motors to just Kia and introducing a new logo. Seung Kyu Yoon, Kia North America’s president and CEO, says the EV6 is the company’s first vehicle to launch under its plan S, marking a shift towards electrification and sustainable mobility solutions. Kia will also invest a whopping $25 billion in an electric future, Yoon says.

With Kia looking to address the needs of the luxury segment, ev Transportation Services Inc. focusing on the utility market, and other actors targeting buyers in these and other segments, the electric vehicle industry seems to be gearing up for a high degree of competition, all to the benefit of auto buyers.
