Gigafactory in France to Dent Chinese Dominance of EV Battery Production

France is launching the first electric vehicle battery plant in an effort to reindustrialize the nation and catch up with producers from China in a flourishing industry. The gigafactory, located in the northern part of France, would be one of the first factories in Europe to produce electric vehicle batteries, an industry that has historically been controlled by China.

Automotive Cells Company (ACC Group), a partnership composed of Mercedes-Benz, Total Energies and Stellantis, which has brands such as Peugeot, Chrysler and Fiat, owns the battery plant that will be opened at Billy-Berclau in the northern region of France.

The French Ministry of Economy boasts that for the first time in several years, France has an opportunity to built an industry from virtually nothing. Production is expected to begin during the summer, with initial sales expected by this year’s end. Coming on the backdrop of preparations for the European Union ban on the production of new gasoline and diesel vehicles, which will come into force in 2035, this inauguration is a powerful reminder that the car industry has undergone an intensive shift to electric vehicle technology with broad popular support.

Among the first companies to manufacture batteries in Europe is the ACC company, which is regarded as the “Battery Airbus.” After this factory opens, there will be four more battery factories in France as well, each of which is situated in the Hauts-de-France area.

From the beginning of 2025, AESC-Envision, the Japanese-Sino company close to Douai City, intends to supply Renault Electricity with batteries. In addition, Verkor, a startup established in Grenoble, will begin producing batteries in Dunkirk in the middle of 2025,while ProLogium, a Taiwanese battery company, plans to commence operating its first factory overseas in 2026.

Over the last few years, a total of about 50 such projects have been planned around Europe. Europe does not want to rely too much on suppliers from Asia, especially China, which is 10 to 20 years more advanced in this industry.

By 2030, the government of France plans to manufacture an estimated 2 million electric cars annually and estimates that ACC Company by itself should be able to create enough batteries to outfit 500,000 electric vehicles annually by that time. France has a target of supplying its car industry with sufficient batteries manufactured in the nation by 2027 and has hopes of exporting the batteries to other countries. However, energy costs are still high in France in contrast to America and China, which extensively subsidize this sector.

As more companies around the world begin to produce EV batteries, industry players such as Atlis Motor Vehicles Inc. (NASDAQ: AMV) will have to keep upping their game in order to retain or even grow their market share.
