Fisker Plans to Make Fully Electric Pickup

Electric vehicles (“EVs”) have been crowned the zero-emission vehicles of the future, but that isn’t always the case. Although battery electric vehicles (“BEVs”) produce zero emissions, mining the metals used in their lithium-ion battery packs has raised several environmental concerns. Additionally, the electricity used to charge the vehicles isn’t always sourced sustainably, and there are questions about how effectively these batteries can be recycled or disposed of once they reach the end of their lives.

Fisker Inc. (NYSE: SPAQ), the electric vehicle firm founded and led by billionaire Henrik Fisker, has recently announced that it will develop a “climate neutral” car and electric pickup truck to avoid these pitfalls. The climate-neutral car will be built and designed in a fashion that has the lowest possible environmental impact. This will include how its parts are sourced and assembled as well as how it is charged and recycled once it reaches the end of its life. According to Fisker, the vehicle will hit the market by 2027.

The Manhattan Beach-based EV maker will also roll out an electric pickup truck, which it first teased back in February via an image posted on Twitter. For years, the pickup truck has been America’s favorite vehicle and consequently, numerous EV makers are offering electric versions of this popular vehicle. As such, Fisker will be facing stiff competition once it unveils its pickup truck, with companies such as Rivian, Tesla, Lordstown, General Motors and Ford throwing their hats into the fray.

Based on the image of Fisker’s pickup truck, the EV will have a smaller bed and it will be more of a lifestyle-oriented vehicle rather than a workhorse such as Ford’s recently unveiled F-150 Lightning pickup truck. Although the company hasn’t released its upcoming pickup truck’s specs, CEO and founder Fisker said that the vehicle would look far more radical than the design he posted on Twitter early this year showed. The EV would also be the lightest and most efficient vehicle in the swiftly growing electric pickup truck segment.

In total, Fisker plans on launching at least four electric vehicles by 2025, with its first one being the Ocean SUV. The company will start producing the SUV in late 2022, and it will be based on a modular platform provided by Austria-based Magna Steyr. The Ocean will be powered by an 80-kilowatt-hour battery with a range of 250-300 miles, and it will have a starting price of $37,499. Further details about the electric pickup and the two other EVs are forthcoming.
