Could Tesla Inc.’s (NASDAQ: TSLA) Cybertruck Kill Off Traditional Pickups?

In a recent YouTube video, a Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) investor said that the company’s latest Cybertruck is in motion to kill off the traditional pickup truck. According to Dave Lee, the design of the Cybertruck is the best for a vehicle whose toughness makes its use more efficient.

The design of the Cybertruck is Tesla’s best and, according to the brand’s chief designer, the overall appearance is meant to match the vehicle’s functionality. In a podcast interview with Spike’s Car Radio, Franz Von Holzhausen said the design took a first-principles approach stating that priorities were placed on the truck’s utility and the circumstance in which it would be used.

The stainless steel design will be efficient in making the pickup truck invulnerable to bullets and dents. The armor plating will also prevent the car from getting scratches as it drives into trees. Another advantage of using stainless steel is that it saves time and money used for repairs as it does not rust.

However, it is hard to form stainless steel, and therefore Tesla will leverage the SpaceX welding techniques as well as an alloy of about 300 stainless steel. The electric vehicle’s (“EV”) angular character will be influenced by the bending of sheets, which tends to follow one direction.

Despite the popularity of Model Y, the Tesla Cybertruck might be the brand’s best product, according to CEO Elon Musk. During Tesla’s Q4 earnings announcement, Musk said you can produce something to be infinitely desirable but when it is not economical it will constrain people from purchasing when they cannot afford it. He aspires for the total order of Cybertrucks per year to reach 400,000.

Through the truck’s design, Holzhausen feels like they have uncovered the right design of a pickup. Normally, pickup trucks have a painted exterior and do not use armor plating. Moreover, the paint being the most delicate part of the exterior does not play into the tough character of a pickup. The choice of the metal, according to David Lee, is clever as it will make other designs of trucks look “fragile and weak.”

In other words, this innovation will bring an end to an era of the design of pickup trucks as we know it. With the introduction of the Cybertruck, consumers will be able to see how durable the truck is and thus making it desirable while other carmakers will find it hard to match the design.

This is because automakers are focused on electrifying their existing models of pickup trucks. Last year, Ford released an electric version of their best-selling F-150 model. Meanwhile, other carmakers are still in debt over their ICE vehicles, while Tesla owes less.

Tesla’s innovative approach in car design is hard to be replicated as it requires hundreds of techniques for the EV to be available to the masses. According to Lee, this knowledge will assist Tesla in its innovation to make more types of vehicles that incorporate armor plating.
