Chinese-Made EVs Now Come with Onboard Camera Drones

Chinese vehicle manufacturers have begun incorporating camera drones into their electric vehicles to give customers great overhead shots of themselves while they drive. For example, BYD brand YangWang is now equipping its Yangwang U8 luxury SUV with a modified DJI Mavic drone that comes with three spare batteries. The drone will be controlled via the DJI Fly app on the hybrid SUV’s infotainment center and reside in a dedicated roof space when not in use.

China’s electric vehicle industry has been at the forefront of innovation and creativity in recent years as dozens of electric vehicle companies in the country struggle to outcompete each other. As a result, electric car manufacturers in China have spent the past couple of years equipping their EVs with cutting-edge features to stand out from the pack and attract customers.

YangWang’s custom controller (with no screen) will allow drivers to operate the modified drone and display the camera drone’s view via the electric car’s infotainment. Once the drone is done capturing cool shots and images, the driver only has to activate the drone’s Return to Home feature to summon it back into its rooftop dock.

BYD isn’t the first auto manufacturer to come up with the concept of building a drone into an electric car. Swedish company Polestar was the first to do so after it revealed the concept of an EV with an integrated drone before ultimately eliminating the drone idea from the final Q2 concept.

Through its YangWang brand, BYD seems to be in a better position to mass produce electric cars that come with a camera drone, however small the market for these products is. Installing the modified DJI Mavic drone on the $150,000 Yangwang U8 may be a stroke of genius as the hybrid SUV comes with a 75-liter fuel tank and 49 kWh battery that provides it with a whopping 621 miles of range. This means even the most enthusiastic drone user will still be able to keep the batteries as well as its spare batteries fully charged.

Also in China, a compact SUV inspired by Chinese military vehicles, called the M-Hero 917, recently gained the ability to control a DJI drone launched off the hood through an operating system update. Drivers can also launch the GDU tech drone from the compact SUV’s roof and operate it from inside their cars via voice control.

With Chinese manufacturers taking the competition for market share to a whole new technological level, other companies such as Workhorse Group Inc. (NASDAQ: WKHS) will have to find their own ways to gaining and sustaining market share globally.
