Carmakers Prepare for Partly Online 2022 CES Show

It has been nearly two years since the coronavirus pandemic first broke onto the scene and threw the entire globe into disarray. Faced with the threat of a deadly virus, countries shut down their borders and issued lockdown orders that saw most companies either reduce or halt their operations altogether. Gatherings of any kind were out of the question, thus relegating the 2021 Consumer Electronic Show (“CES”) to 100% virtual attendance. Now that the 2022 CES is approaching and the end of the pandemic is nowhere in sight, this year’s show will barely feature in-person attendance as well.

Still, automakers from around the world would like to showcase at least some of their new technologies in the now partly virtual show. The 2022 CES, which is to run from Jan. 5–7, 2022, was expected to feature 2,000 exhibitors as of Dec. 31, 2021. Generally, this year’s show has been scaled down, and most major companies that will attend plan on doing so virtually. General Motors, for starters, has announced that its attendance will be 100% virtual. According to a statement from a GM spokesperson, the company will continue with its plans to share “significant company news,” albeit using an all-digital approach.

This includes the unveiling of the new Chevrolet Silverado EV as well as the keynote address from CEO Mary Barra. General Motor’s new startup BrightDrop will also be attending the 2022 CES virtually and will present news about incoming electric vehicles (“EVs”) alongside GM’s virtual keynote address. German carmakers BMW and Mercedes Benz also plan on attending the 2022 show virtually. BMW stated that it would cancel in-person attendance due to the coronavirus pandemic and shift to a fully digital program.

Mercedez Benz told CNET that its utmost priority is maintaining the health and safety of its employees, customers, partners and guests. This means its new Vision EQXX will be unveiled virtually. Amsterdam-based Stellantis will also be making a virtual appearance, unveiling vehicles from a couple of its brands in a virtual showroom. This includes the Citroen Ami EV, the Chrysler Airflow concept, a DS Automobiles Formula E race car, and the Fiat New 500.

Electric vehicle startup Fisker will also make an appearance. CEO Henrik Fisker will conduct both in-person and virtual meetings to help promote the company’s upcoming Fisker Ocean, which features Fisker’s advanced ADAS system. The Fisker Ocean will be equipped with a 4D radar system, and the automaker claims it will be the first passenger vehicle to feature 4D radar.

Hopefully, the 2022 CES will whip up some additional excitement in the motoring public, and manufacturers such as Mullen Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ: MULN) will enjoy higher sales numbers.
