How to Optimize the Range of Your Electric Vehicle

If you own an electric car, figuring out how to maximize its efficiency is critical to optimizing the vehicle’s range. You can do this in several ways. For starters, speed does more to drain an electric vehicle’s range than almost anything else a driver controls. Sustained highway speeds pull far more from the battery than stop-start city driving, where a car can recover some of that energy every time it slows down.

If a long trip leaves you uncertain about reaching a charger, dropping from 100 kilometers per hour to 90 stretches your range noticeably, and cutting back further to 70 stretches it substantially more.

Driving style compounds that effect, with cruise control and eco mode smoothing out the acceleration swings that quietly waste energy. Resisting the urge to sprint away from every red light also preserves the range that quick throttle response tempts drivers to burn, while switching off the air conditioning trims a little more, though nothing else moves the needle the way speed does.

Regenerative braking works in the opposite direction, turning deceleration into free power. As the car slows, the motor briefly reverses roles and channels energy back into the battery, a function most new EVs run automatically unless a driver switches it off.

Pairing that system with one-pedal driving amplifies the benefit: instead of alternating between pedals, drivers lift off the accelerator and let the car coast itself down, holding the brake in reserve for genuine emergencies. The technique feels unfamiliar at first, experts say, but most drivers adjust within days and rarely go back.

Tire condition matters almost as much as speed. Underinflated tires drag against the road and force the motor to work harder just to maintain pace, so checking pressure against the manufacturer’s spec once a month pays off. Excess cargo and add-ons carry a similar cost: every extra kilogram and every roof rack adds resistance the battery has to overcome.

Long-term battery care rounds out the picture. Keeping charge between roughly 20 and 80% suits everyday driving, with a full charge reserved for longer journeys, and slower home charging generally beats rapid public chargers when time allows.

Costs shrink further with the right setup: pairing a home charger with solar power is the cheapest combination available, and off-peak electricity rates come close behind. One driver described cutting an annual fuel bill of roughly $3,000 down to around $100 after switching to solar for nearly all of their charging.

When these techniques are applied consistently while driving an EV made by any company, such as Massimo Group (NASDAQ: MAMO), the total cost of owning an electric vehicle could go down significantly as drivers optimize how far each charge can take them.
