Wireless Charging Has Potential to Speed Up EV Uptake

Electric vehicles (“EVs”) have been crowned as the successor of the internal combustion engine vehicles, which have dominated the roads for more than a century. Climate change and global warming have necessitated the switch from fossil fuel-powered cars to zero-emission electric cars, and several territories around the world have issued mandates to ensure this transition happens over the next couple of decades.

However, one issue that has consistently stood in the way of mass EV adoption and is poised to be a major problem moving forward is EV charging. America’s public EV charging infrastructure is insufficient and  unreliable; in addition, it takes far too long to recharge EVs, making many drivers reluctant to ditch their petrol or diesel car for electric vehicles.

Consequently, industry stakeholders have been working hard on a long-term solution for range anxiety, with battery makers developing lighter, more energy-dense batteries and EV makers designing their vehicles to be more efficient to reduce power consumption and increase range. Wireless charging, which refers to the transfer of an electric current through the air rather than via wires, is a relatively new technology that has the potential to revolutionize the nascent EV industry. This technology would allow energy suppliers to install chargers in a wide variety of places, in addition to just in charging stations, increasing access to charging infrastructure.

If you are an EV owner who regularly travels long distances or you simply enjoy long drives, you most likely have to plot out your entire trip to ensure that there are enough public charging stations between you and your destination. But if wireless charging technology is seamlessly integrated into the EV space, you may be able to hit the road without having to worry about running out of juice.

This technology consists of a charging pad installed on the ground and a receiving pad built into the underside of an EV. Energy is transferred from the charging pad to the receiving pads via resonant magnetic induction at a rate of 3.3 to 20 kW. All you have to do is park your vehicle above the charging pad for the process to start.

Such a Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging System (“WEVCS”) would allow drivers to gradually charge their vehicles whenever they stop for a short time, say at the supermarket or the grocery shop. Additionally, the technology’s minimalist nature will also enable providers to install numerous chargers in a single location, hence the chances of finding a free charging spot whenever you stop at a charging location will be higher.

Industry players could even go a step further and embed charging transmitters in highway sections, allowing compatible vehicles to recharge their batteries as they drive. With electric vehicles poised to take over the roads amid strict emission standards, wireless charging can play a major role in easing charging and speeding up EV uptake.

Several companies, including Ideanomics Inc. (NASDAQ: IDEX), are investing in developing wireless charging technologies, and it may not be long before this form of charging becomes commonplace in different jurisdictions.
