Lucid Motors Uses Silicon Carbide Tech in New Model

Earlier this week, Wolfspeed announced that Lucid Motors (NASDAQ: LCID) had used its silicon carbide power device solution in its pure-electric high-performance vehicle, Lucid Air. Wolfspeed is a major player in silicon carbide technology, leading the market in the global adoption of GaN and silicon carbide technologies. The company offers industry-leading solutions for a sustainable future and efficient consumption of energy.

Wolfspeed is party to an agreement with Lucid Motors involving the production and supply of silicon carbide devices. Lucid Motors chief engineer and senior VP of production, Eric Bach, stated that the automaker’s proprietary powertrain technology was what made its new high-performance vehicle the most efficient and advanced luxury electric car globally. Bach explained that the silicon carbide power conductors produced by Wolfspeed were a good fit for the company’s advanced technology.

Wolfspeed plans to supply its advanced silicon carbide semiconductors from its Mohawk Valley Fabrication facility for use in the Lucid Air. This state-of-the-art facility will be the biggest 200-mm silicon carbide fabrication facility around the globe and will significantly grow Wolfspeed’s power device production capacity.

The agreement between the two companies also affords Lucid Motors access to increased capacity, which will better support its long-term production of vehicles.

Wolfspeed CEO Gregg Lowe explained that silicon carbide technology was at the forefront of the transition to the use of electric cars as the world advanced toward an all-electric future for transport. This technology, he continued, would enable superior charge time, range and performance.

Lowe noted that the company’s investment in its new facility also ensured that its consumers would have access to products they require to deliver innovative solutions to the market. Wolfspeed’s product families include RF devices, power devices and silicon carbide materials targeted for different applications, including aerospace and defense, electric cars, renewable energy and storage, 5G and fast charging.

The inverters used in the Lucid Air feature the XM3 silicon carbide power modules manufactured by Wolfspeed. The XM3 power module possess a high power density, minimal resistance and low switching loses, which contributes to the power density and efficiency of Lucid Air’s 75 kg 500kW electric motor.

Lucid Air is the fastest-charging, longest-range luxury electric vehicle globally. It possesses an unrivaled range of 520 miles per charge and has incredible horsepower. In addition to this, it is one of the most aerodynamic vehicles around the globe, inspired by the shape of an aircraft.

Lucid Motors remains focused on delivering range as well as comfort and high performance to its consumers.
