CATL Launches Battery Designed for Light Commercial EVs

China’s traction battery standards tightened on July 1, introducing new thermal runaway and fast-charging safety requirements for manufacturers. Against that regulatory shift, CATL has extended its commercial EV battery portfolio with the Tectrans II Superfast Charging Edition, targeting light commercial vehicles. The product addresses logistics operators whose electric delivery fleets are constrained by long charging windows and high asset downtime.

Charging speed defines the battery’s commercial proposition, with CATL describing the Tectrans II as the first unit in its category to reach 8C peak charging. A 20-to-80-percent charge advance takes 6 minutes and 48 seconds while a full charge is reached in just under nine minutes. Three operational challenges specific to electric delivery fleets shaped the battery’s design priorities.

Long charging windows reduce vehicle utilization rates in high-cycle urban delivery operations, cold-weather performance degradation limits practical usability across northern markets, and battery aging compresses residual values and raises total ownership costs. CATL has addressed each area through targeted engineering, backing the result with a ten-year, one-million-kilometer warranty.

The Chinese battery-maker reduced internal cell resistance by 50% relative to industry norms, limiting heat buildup during rapid charging cycles. Engineers also restructured the graphite anode material at the atomic scale to reduce active lithium loss and slow long-term capacity fade. At minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit, charging time extends by roughly 2.5 minutes relative to standard operating temperatures, demonstrating that cold-temperature performance is largely preserved.

Tectrans, previously known as Tianxing, became CATL’s dedicated commercial vehicle battery brand upon its July 2024 debut. Early releases served heavy-duty trucks and construction machinery before light commercial vehicle variants arrived earlier in 2026, with a sodium-ion option among them.

Each successive release has expanded the portfolio into new vehicle categories. Adding an 8C model to the Tectrans II generation gives CATL its first high-speed charging option in the light commercial segment.

Passenger car battery development at CATL has moved on a faster timeline. The company’s third-generation Shenxing battery, announced in April, targets a 10-80% charge in 3 minutes and 44 seconds. Light commercial vehicles now enter that broader charging speed progression, though their current benchmark performance remains considerably slower. Narrowing that gap appears to be among CATL’s medium-term engineering priorities.

Infrastructure build-out accompanies the launch, with CATL announcing a shared network of rapid-charging and battery-swap stations for delivery vans and passenger cars alike. The network serves urban delivery operations, regional freight corridors, and cold-chain logistics customers. Currently, the company operates 2,000 Choco battery-swapping stations and has raised its target to 4,000 locations across approximately 190 Chinese cities by 2026.

While these improved batteries are initially planned for use within China, a time may come when CATL opens access to its batteries to EV makers around the world, and it would be interesting to see how industry players like Massimo Group (NASDAQ: MAMO) evolve their product lineups to incorporate these innovative batteries.
