Nissan has unveiled plans to transform vehicular mobility using a combination of electrification, artificial intelligence (AI), and a vehicle lineup focused on the global market. Although the Japanese carmaker did not go all-in on electrification like its Western counterparts, Nissan had a pair of fully electric models by early 2026 and has pledged to launch 19 new EV models by the end of the decade.
Dubbed “Mobility Intelligence for Everyday Life,” the recently-unveiled strategy will make customer experience its main priority. Artificial intelligence will play a central role as Nissan combines AI-powered EV tech with a variety of electric powertrains to develop EVs that cater to customers in different markets.
With nearly every major automaker looking to break into the still-nascent electric vehicle market, Nissan will have a lot of competition in both Asia and the West.
Nissan CEO and President Ivan Espinosa notes that the automaker’s new course represents the next step past the recovery plan dubbed Re:Nissan that was launched in 2025. The plan is designed to help Nissan recover its performance and reposition the Japanese automaker for long-term success in the rapidly changing vehicle market.
As per Re:Nissan, the carmaker aims to deliver reliable, advanced, and intuitive vehicles that streamline daily mobility and provide greater value to customers. With AI technology becoming more ubiquitous, Nissan is set to make greater use of the technology via the AI-defined Vehicle (AIDV) platform, which is a combination of Nissan AI Partner and Nissan AI Drive.
The latter will integrate artificial intelligence into vehicle safety and control systems, focusing on providing advanced driver assistance and enabling autonomous electric mobility. Nissan intends to incorporate the technology into 90% of its vehicle lineup in the future.
The Nissan Elgrand will be the first Nissan electric car to feature this AI-powered technology and is set to be released in summer 2026. Next-gen ProPILOT with built-in autonomous technology (end-to-end) will come by the close of fiscal year 2027. Additionally, the Japanese carmaker will use Nissan AI Partner to further augment the in-vehicle experience by making car interactions more personalized and natural, and supporting daily driver tasks.
Nissan will also focus on electrifying a wide variety of its technologies as per its future roadmap. This will include further expansions to its Hybrid e-Power system, which delivers electric vehicle-level responsiveness to limit charging dependency using an electric motor.
In addition to e-Power, Nissan is also set to build a novel hybrid system for body-on-frame vehicles to serve drivers in the market for more robust capability and more extended range. With many other companies like Ferrari N.V. (NYSE: RACE) also embarking on ambitious EV plans, Nissan will have to come up with really innovative features in order to make its mark in the industry.
