Essential Tips on Charging Your EV Every Night

The next few decades will see battery electric vehicles (“EVs”) become the dominant mode of vehicular transport. As such, drivers are predictably worried about how they will charge their electric vehicles once they make the switch and ditch their petrol- and diesel-powered cars. While range anxiety is a main concern among most drivers, especially given that there are insufficient public charging stations, research shows that using home chargers for overnight charging can provide all the driving power most cars need.

Even though electric vehicle makers have been developing EVs with increasing range, the reality is on average, most drivers don’t cover high miles. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration, the average driver covers around 260 miles per week, adding up to 13,500 miles yearly. Based on data from the Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”), electric vehicles with the longest range can cover the average weekly distance on a single charge, with even the shortest range EVs covering a sizeable portion of the miles covered weekly.

Thus, most EV drivers don’t have to charge their electric vehicles every night. Not only does it avail more power than they need to travel to work and run errands per week, nightly charging will also have a negative effect on their cars’ batteries. Rather than internal combustion engines, electric vehicles run on rechargeable lithium-ion battery packs, and these batteries have a long but ultimately limited lifespan. Battery makers are constantly working to develop lighter, more energy-dense batteries, but the unfortunate reality is that each charging and discharging cycle degrades the battery.

Consequently, charging your electric vehicle overnight every night will hasten the rate at which its battery pack degrades. On top of that, experts do not recommend always charging your EV up to 100%. A research team from the University of Michigan found that for long-term efficiency, EV batteries should spend as little time as possible at 0% and 100%. Such extremes will create stress for your vehicle’s batteries and reduce their lifespans.

Experts recommend maintaining an EV battery between 30% and 80%. Once you calculate how many miles you travel per day, you will probably find that you can go two or three days between charging. By ensuring that the battery spends as little time as possible below 30% and above 80%, you will reduce the stress the battery is under.

Extreme weather should also be taking into consideration. Extreme heat and cold will reduce your EV battery’s ability to hold a charge and reduce its lifetime, so make sure you park your vehicle in a garage when temperatures drop or outside in the cold when temps gets too hot. As the nation’s network of public charging stations grows more extensive, you won’t have to rely 100% on home chargers and range anxiety will soon become a thing of the past.

As electric vehicle makers such as ev Transportation Services Inc. keep coming up with more reliable models of electric vehicles, motorists who optimize the way they care for and charge the batteries will realize that switching from ICE vehicles was the best driving decision they ever made.
