World-First Mass Produced Solid State EV Battery Charges in 5 Minutes

A solid-state battery designed for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) is pushing EV charging into gas-station territory. Unveiled by Donut Lab at CES 2026, the new battery is designed to fully recharge an electric vehicle in around five minutes, a milestone the company says could remove one of the biggest barriers holding back mass EV adoption.

It is the first EV battery of its kind to reach mass production and could pave the way for electric cars that can charge in the same time it takes to fill up a combustion engine car.

Solid-state batteries have long been seen as a breakthrough solution to boosting EV battery safety and increasing range and performance, but most designs remained stuck in laboratories or early pilot programs.

Donut Lab says its new battery marks the first time a solid-state system engineered expressly for EVs is ready for large-scale production. According to the company, the battery delivers roughly double the energy density of current lithium-ion packs used in many leading electric cars.

Higher energy density means more range without increasing size or weight, a critical advantage as manufacturers try to improve efficiency without inflating vehicle costs. Donut Lab also claims the battery lasts longer and performs more consistently in both extreme heat and severe cold. As expected, charging speed is where the announcement has drawn the most attention.

Donut Lab says the battery can accept a full charge in about five minutes, a timeframe comparable to refueling a combustion-engine vehicle. Long charging stops remain one of the most common concerns among potential EV buyers, particularly those without access to home charging. A shift to ultra-fast charging could fundamentally change how drivers think about electric vehicles on long trips.

Speaking at CES 2026, Donut Lab’s chief executive said the company’s ambition is to make electric vehicles so compelling that combustion engines become obsolete. He pointed to the battery’s combination of speed, energy density, and durability as a way to remove long-standing trade-offs between convenience and sustainability. Safety and reliability are also central to the company’s pitch.

Donut Lab says the battery retains more than 99 percent of its capacity even when exposed to temperatures as low as minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit or as high as 212 degrees. Unlike conventional lithium-ion cells, the solid-state design is also claimed to be far less prone to catching fire if damaged, addressing another concern frequently raised by critics of EV technology.

The first production vehicle to use the battery will not be a car, but a motorcycle. Verge Motorcycles plans to launch an updated version of its TS Pro electric bike using the new battery, with customer deliveries expected in the first quarter of 2026. While the initial rollout is limited, it offers a real-world test case for scaling the technology to larger vehicles.

If Donut Lab’s claims hold up outside controlled demonstrations, the implications are significant. A five-minute charge paired with higher range and improved safety could accelerate the shift away from combustion engines and reshape expectations for electric mobility worldwide.

The adoption of these new batteries could open immense opportunities for many EV makers like Rivian Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ: RIVN) to appeal to a lot more buyers that have been hesitant about making the switch to an electric vehicle.
