Volkswagen Surpasses 2 Million EV Deliveries Milestone

Volkswagen has officially delivered more than two million electric vehicles, a landmark achievement that underscores just how far the German automaker has traveled since first entering the battery-electric segment over a decade ago. The milestone unit was an ID.3, assembled at its Saxony facility and collected by its new owner at a dedicated handover center in Dresden.

Beneath that symbolic choice of model, however, the real commercial engine of Volkswagen’s electric push is the ID.4 SUV. Accounting for close to 901,000 combined sales alongside its sleeker sibling the ID.5, the pairing holds a clear lead as the brand’s highest-volume electric nameplate. North American and Chinese buyers have been particularly receptive, with both markets emerging as critical pillars of the model’s international performance.

Although the ID.4 leads on volume, the ID.3 deserves significant credit for laying the groundwork. Introduced in 2019 as the first model riding Volkswagen’s dedicated electric architecture, it contributed around 628,000 units to the total delivery count, demonstrating early on that the platform was viable at meaningful scale. It may have ceded the sales crown, but its strategic importance to the brand’s electric story remains considerable.

Battery-electric ambitions at Volkswagen actually predate the entire ID. family by several years. The brand made its first move in the segment back in 2013 with a compact city car, later adding an electrified Golf variant before committing to the purpose-engineered lineup that defines its current range.

Sitting at the premium end of that lineup is the ID.7, a flagship long-range sedan launched in 2023 with a wagon variant following shortly behind. Volkswagen describes it as evidence of how substantially the ID. platform has evolved, with its efficiency credentials and refined driving character positioning the brand as a serious contender at the upper end of the electric market.

Next in the pipeline are two compact models aimed squarely at everyday affordability. The ID. Polo and ID. Cross are set to arrive as part of a broader group commitment to launch four electric city cars across its brand family within the next two years.

Board Member for Sales Martin Sander described the push as an effort to bring compelling, realistically priced electric transport to drivers who have so far found the segment financially out of reach, calling it a decisive step in the company’s ongoing transformation. With a large percentage of the global market still locked out of the EV industry by price, the move could make Volkswagen one of the most prolific electric vehicle manufacturers on the globe.

As companies like Ferrari N.V. (NYSE: RACE) work to enter the EV space, the story of how VW reached two million units delivered could offer some inspiration and key lessons to adopt.
