A growing number of automakers are experimenting with configurations that combine electric cars and drones. What may have started out as a novelty is quickly becoming a new niche in the automotive sector as more EV‑drone combos hit the vehicle market.
From mobile drone mission systems to rooftop drone launchers, carmakers around the world are exploring various electric vehicle and drone pairings that could potentially change how people drive, work, and even interact with the environment. Here are some notable examples of this trend:
BYD’s Roof‑Mounted “Lingyuan” System. Chinese vehicle giant BYD has teamed up with drone manufacturer DJI to create the Lingyuan drone dock, available on BYD models like the Bao 8, Tang L, and the Dao. One of the pioneers of the drone‑EV trend, the dock is housed in a 0.29m² rooftop compartment and can launch the drone, fly it alongside the car at speeds of up to 54 km/h, autonomously return the drone to charge within a 2km range, and land it on the vehicle at speeds of up to 25km/h.
The drone takes about half an hour to charge from 20% to 80%, and provides users with access to real-time perspectives, aerial footage, and artificial intelligence (AI) image editing—all for roughly $2,200.
BYD Tai 7 Plug‑In Hybrid with Drone Option. BYD also introduced the Fang Cheng Bao 7 SUV with an aerial package option. The model features a lidar‑equipped roof and smart mobility tools alongside traditional powertrains, offering a rugged plug‑in SUV for adventurous drivers eager to capture tantalizing aerial views of their journeys. When paired with lidar, the rooftop drone can also enhance BYD’s God’s Eye driver assistance technology.
Hyundai IONIQ 9 Seed‑Ball Drone Station. Hyundai has also contributed to the growing EV‑drone trend with its IONIQ 9 “Seed‑Ball Drone Station.” However, rather than capturing dramatic aerial footage, this setup is designed to assist reforestation efforts in wildfire‑affected zones. The system is built on the IONIQ 9’s trunk platform and powered by vehicle‑to‑load (V2L) technology.
It deploys clay‑encased seed balls containing soil, seeds, and organic matter into hard‑to‑reach areas with minimal disturbance and zero emissions. Hyundai’s drone‑EV configuration reflects its commitment to the Smart Forest Reforestation Program and shows how this trend can serve much more than entertainment.
As EV‑drone integrations evolve, their potential is beginning to eclipse their novelty. From storytelling and data‑gathering to conservation and safety, these systems expand what vehicles can do, both on the road and in the air.
As more renewable energy products become available from enterprises like SolarBank Corp. (NASDAQ: SUUN) (Cboe CA: SUNN) (FSE: GY2), electric vehicles featuring drones could have their utility expanded even further.
