Israeli Startup to Commercialize EV Battery That Can Recharge in Four Minutes

An Israeli startup is promising to deliver extremely fast-charging electric vehicle batteries that can add 100 miles of range in only four minutes. Current electric vehicle batteries are known for their limited range, especially in lower-end electric cars.

The average electric car will take from 45 minutes to several hours to charge, depending on the type of charging station used. Compared to fossil fuel cars, which typically take only minutes to refill, recharging an electric car can take exponentially longer.

Consequently, several companies in the EV and battery-making sectors are racing to develop next-generation EV batteries with more energy density and much faster charging times. Such battery technologies could help accelerate EV adoption by mitigating issues such as range anxiety, which have kept many drivers from purchasing battery electric cars.

StoreDot is a startup from Israel that has been in the EV and EV battery space for several years. Four months ago, the startup announced that it was close to creating EV batteries that could add as much as 100 miles in only five minutes. This put the developmental battery in the extreme fast-charging class.

According to Edmund’s electric vehicle charging review, the current fastest rate of EV charging is 100 miles of range in seven minutes, 48 seconds. Despite already beating the record for fastest EV charging speeds, StoreDot hopes to reach the 100-miles-in-three-minute milestone by 2028.

The startup announced that it had achieved the “100-in-4” milestone in initial prototype tests ahead of schedule by implementing cell enhancements that leverage “available infrastructure capabilities” to allow extremely fast charging.

StoreDot anticipates beginning mass-producing the new battery in 2026. If StoreDot’s experimental battery or similar variants hit the market, EV drivers would be able to charge as quickly and conveniently as combustion engine vehicle drivers.

Early tests show that StoreDot’s battery can achieve 11,000 cycles of extremely fast charging in relatively small form factors. Once this battery technology is scaled up to large EV formats, it will have an energy capacity of 340 watts per kilogram.

The Israeli startup notes that its quick progress in extremely fast-charging tests is due to a “holistic battery design” that considers both energy density and charging speed instead of just focusing on speed. StoreDot looks to increase the energy density in its 100-in-4 EV battery cells by another 10%.

CEO Dr. Doron Myersdorf notes that using a “balanced system-level approach” allowed the startup to draw the full potential of its extreme fast-charging battery technology. He explains that the startup focused on making advancements in battery cell pack chemistry and design, cooling optimization, and energy density, resulting in a battery with extremely fast charging capabilities.

When these super fast-charging batteries proliferate the electric vehicle market, manufacturers such as Cenntro Electric Group Ltd. (NASDAQ: CENN) could penetrate the market much faster because range anxiety will be a thing of the past.
