Differences Between EV Driving in Europe and the US

Electric vehicles (“EVs”) are soon taking over the transportation industry. However, much still needs to be done for these vehicles to be accommodated into this sector. Furthermore, different countries are taking different strategies to incorporate these vehicles in their transport sectors. Some of the most considerable differences between EV driving in Europe and the U.S. have been highlighted below:

If you own an EV in Europe, you will have to carry your own charging cable and plug it in when you need to power your car. The action is opposite in the U.S.; all the charging stations in the U.S. have cables attached to the charging station. If you have an EV in the U.S., you will therefore not be burdened to carry your charging cable. Furthermore, in the U.S., you will not be worried about how you will charge your car if you forget your cable as it is in Europe.

Stations having their charging cables attached, which makes life simple for you as a driver, and for the station management. However, in stations with attached cables, high maintenance levels need to be put in place. If these measures are not put in place, the charging cables will be damaged or cause accidents if you accidentally step on them.

In Europe, most charging stations are owned by the state, making the cost of charging to be consistent. Therefore, if you own an EV in Europe, you will not have the headache of establishing your own charging station. In the U.S., the situation is different. Most of the charging stations are privately owned. It also means that the cost of charging your car will depend on the hours you spend charging your and how you are managing your station.

In the U.S., you will drive your electric vehicle in order to make some savings since driving an EV is cheaper than driving a conventional car. However, in Europe, you will opt to go for EV because they are environmentally friendly. The amazing thing in these two places is that in Europe, you will go for an EV since it is eco-friendly while in the U.S., you will buy an EV because you don’t want to spend more on either petrol or diesel.

In Europe, people prefer having a charging station that will take a smaller space while in the U.S., having a bigger station will be your dream. One reason why people opt for a bigger station in the U.S. is that they are few. Having bigger stations in the U.S. makes them be noticed quickly by drivers. There is also another notion in the U.S. that bigger is better, that’s why you will find them having bigger charging stations as compared to Europe.

While there are many EV manufacturing companies in the U.S., the uptake of these vehicles is still behind that in Europe. Consequently, it is easier to find a charging station in Europe while the same facilities are limited in the U.S.

The gap in the numbers is narrowing, thanks in part to the effort of U.S. EV makers like Lordstown Motors Corp. who are ensuring that there is an electric car to suit the needs of different car owners.
