Chargeway App Allows EV Owners to Find Charging Spots in North America

Chargeway has launched an app that will allow its users to find charging spots for their electric vehicles (“EVs”) in North America. The app is available on devices running iOS 14 and can be integrated with Apple’s Carplay. In addition to locating charging facilities, the app also offers a trip-planning feature.

The app is created by Chargeway, a company that was founded in 2018 by branding strategist Matt Teske. He formed the startup with the idea of supporting EV owners who have a hard time locating charging points, a major problem affecting EV adoption in the United States.

He tested his idea by having an information kiosk in Portland showrooms. The result was that in 15 months, sales of electric vehicles at those car dealers where he displayed his kiosk were almost five times higher than other car dealers selling electric vehicles.

When it comes to selling electric cars, dealers need to ease the anxiety of buyers who lack the understanding of available EV charging options. Teske said the explanations should be likened to how diesel powered cars receive “regular or premium gas at a gas station,” but in this case the fuel is electric.

The app has unique and color-coded visuals on its user interface related to charging options. After opening the app, you will select your electric vehicle, and the app will determine the type of plugs your car has and recommend a station on a map where you can charge your car. To prevent mismatching the charger to your car’s plug, the map displays color-coded chargers that are compatible with the vehicle’s model.

The app also provides information about charging stations including number of chargers, related costs and charging speed on a scale of 1 to 7. Customers can provide their feedback on those spots through a star-rating feature as well as reach network support through a quick call feature.

Electric cars have a different range at different temperatures or at different speeds. The trip planning feature of the app allows its users to select driving speed and temperature for the trip. Teske says that the app eases range anxiety by eliminating the guesswork and calculating what kind of range drivers will have on their trips.

The app is available to electric car owners in Canada and the United States who are on select networks including Greenlots, SemaConnect, Chargepoint, Blink, Electrify America, Volta, GE Wattstation, EVgo, EVConnect, Flo, OpConnect, AeroVironment and Tesla. In addition to creating the app, the company is looking to streamline the sales process for EV car dealers.

As companies such as Chargeway come up with ways to support the sales of EVs , we are likely to see an acceleration in the sales of companies such as Lordstown Motors Corp. (NASDAQ: RIDE) as potential buyers find answers to their questions.
