Toyota Announces Major Update to its EVs

Toyota has announced a major update to its electric vehicle lineup, and the centerpiece achieves something the brand has never managed before. The 2027 Highlander EV debuts as the automaker’s first three-row electric SUV. It also becomes the first battery electric Toyota to be assembled on American soil, two milestones wrapped in a single launch.

Buyers focused on range will find the new electric Toyota SUV particularly attractive. The Highlander EV delivers close to 320 miles of range, with two battery sizes available at purchase. At the entry level, the 77 kilowatt-hour configuration suits drivers with modest daily needs. Anyone who wants maximum distance between stops will need the larger 95.8 kWh option instead.

Cabin space has long been a limitation in Toyota’s electric lineup, and the 2027 Highlander moves decisively to address it. An expanded wheelbase creates noticeably more room across all three rows, making the family SUV a genuinely spacious proposition for buyers who found previous options too cramped.

Interior technology has been redesigned around a 12.3-inch instrument display and a 14-inch central touchscreen running Toyota’s refreshed multimedia platform. Upgraded seating materials and configurable ambient lighting complete an interior that feels like a meaningful step forward.

Building the Highlander EV on home soil allowed Toyota to benefit from available manufacturing incentives. It also speaks directly to buyers who increasingly prioritize locally produced vehicles over EVs manufactured in foreign markets. Reuters reports that Toyota is targeting more than ten new battery electric model launches worldwide this year. U.S.-built production will sit at the center of that strategy for the near to long term future.

Running costs add another compelling layer to the argument for purchasing an electric SUV. Drivers switching from a comparable gasoline SUV can expect annual savings of around $1,000 in reduced fueling and maintenance costs. Electric drivetrains eliminate many of the service requirements that combustion engines accumulate over time.

Charging at home rather than at public stations also cuts per-mile costs further, EnergySage says. Combining home charging with a rooftop solar installation can reduce ongoing fueling costs to near zero, turning the vehicle’s energy economics into a meaningful long-term financial advantage.

Historically, Toyota has been more deliberate about the shift to full electrification than competitors like Tesla or the wave of Chinese manufacturers pushing aggressively into the American market. Bringing a domestically assembled, long-range, three-row electric SUV to buyers signals that its electrification pace is picking up. Converting its substantial base of hybrid loyalists into full EV adopters has always been Toyota’s biggest opportunity in this segment. The Highlander EV is its most direct attempt yet to make that conversion happen at scale.

As the competition intensifies in the U.S. electric vehicle industry, companies like Lucid Motors (NASDAQ: LCID) may have to quickly expand their range of available models in order to appeal to different market segments.
