The Slate Truck Could Usher in New Era for EVs

The recently unveiled Slate Truck could usher in a new age of electric mobility characterized by affordable and accessible electric pickup trucks. Approximately 47% of Americans own a pickup truck, with full-size models from the Ford F-Series, Chevrolet, and Ram being especially popular in the country. As automakers began pivoting to electric cars, some opted to develop electric trucks to tap into North America’s well-known demand for pickups.

However, most electric pickup truck models are far from affordable. On average, an American driver who wants to purchase an electric pickup truck will have to shell out anywhere from $70,000 to $100,000, with cheaper options like the Ford F-150 Lightning costing around $50,000 for the most basic trims, and premium options like the GMC Hummer EV going for over $100,000. At these prices, most electric trucks are out of reach for the average driver.

Slate Auto’s new electric truck could change this by finally providing an affordable electric option for American pickup truck enthusiasts. Expected to cost around $27,000 at launch, the modular electric pickup truck would be the most affordable option in its category across the entire U.S. market. If the Trump administration doesn’t eliminate federal electric vehicle tax credits, the Slate Truck could cost less than $20,000, making it an incredibly affordable option for Americans who want an electric pickup but can’t, or aren’t willing to, spend $50,000 to $100,000 on one.

The $27,000 price tag makes the Slate Truck one of the very few electric vehicles that are cheaper than their gas-powered counterparts. Slate Auto understandably has to make some concessions to allow for its truck’s surprisingly low price. For starters, the Slate Truck will be equipped with a standard EV battery offering 150 miles of range, or an extended-range battery that can travel up to 240 miles on a single charge.

It will also be smaller than its competitors in the electric pickup category, eschewing the hatchback-with-raised-roof look for a much more compact modular aesthetic. Although automakers have gone all in on huge pickup trucks over the past decade, there has been a resurgence in small pickup trucks like the Slate Truck. Ford unveiled the $28,145 Maverick, and Hyundai also entered the space with the $28,750 Santa Cruz pickup.

Even so, the market for small pickup trucks is still quite underserved, and Slate Auto plans to carve out a section of this market for itself. Slate Auto’s $27,000 electric truck could shake up the U.S. auto market by reintroducing the affordable small pickup segment. With a price that undercuts most competitors and solid everyday functionality, it has the potential to bring EV trucks to mainstream consumers, spark greater EV adoption, and redefine what entry-level electric mobility looks like.

Major players like Massimo Group (NASDAQ: MAMO) in the automotive space will be watching Slate Auto’s products after launch to see their impact on the market to see how they help to accelerate EV adoption.
