Ipsos Research Shows More Americans Doubt Eco-Benefits of EVs

New research has revealed that a growing number of Americans aren’t fully sold on the environmental benefits of battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Electric cars produce zero tailpipe emissions as they eschew the traditional internal combustion engine for an electric motor, making them integral to decarbonizing the transportation sector.

However, more than a decade after Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) introduced the first commercial BEV to the market, electric vehicles make up a minuscule portion of new vehicle sales and still haven’t made any progress toward dethroning petrol and diesel-powered vehicles. Ipsos Research has now discovered that the percentage of Americans who doubt that EVs are better for the environment compared to internal combustion engines (ICE) has increased slightly.

The market research organization found that the share of vehicle-buying adults in the United States has dropped from 63% to 58% over the past two years. While this represents a relatively small drop, it has major statistical significance. Most of the Americans who doubt the ecofriendliness of battery electric vehicles comprise folks who are already unwilling to ditch their ICE vehicles for electric cars, or what the auto industry calls “nonconsiderers.”

According to Ipsos researcher Graham Gordon, the idea that EVs aren’t that great for the environment is becoming increasingly prevalent among these consumers. This could be attributed to the complexity of electric-vehicle technology, confusion and ignorance among car owning consumers, and politics.

This comes amid a nationwide slump in electric vehicle sales that has left thousands of unsold BEVs languishing in dealerships and forced established automakers to scale back their admittedly ambitious electrification plans. Although high purchase prices are among the prime reasons most people are unwilling to make the switch, some folks simply don’t believe electric cars are more ecofriendly than their gas-powered counterparts.

Although electric cars are better for the environment, their production isn’t completely free from carbon emissions. For instance, mining the minerals used to build EV batteries results in significant environmental damage, and the batteries themselves can also be pollutants if they aren’t disposed of properly. Many electric cars are also powered by fossil fuel-generated electricity.

EVs are still more ecofriendly than gas-powered vehicles, despite these factors, but data indicates that buyers are growing more doubtful of this fact. Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Jessika Trancik notes that while electric-vehicle technology isn’t perfect, it is much more beneficial to the environment compared to fossil-fuel-powered cars. As such, electric cars will be key to the United States decarbonizing its transport sector and achieving zero-carbon emissions.

Although there are questions regarding the hidden environmental costs involved in EV production and use, Trancik says, they have been answered “exhaustively.”
