How to Prolong the Service Life of Your Electric Vehicle

Electric vehicles are still a relative novelty, and many potential buyers of these vehicles worry about how they can get the longest life possible from these vehicles. Given the high price of EVs, who wouldn’t want to squeeze the most benefit from such a possession? We discuss some recommendations that can help you prolong the service life of your electric vehicle.

Avoid temperature extremes

Conditions that are too hot or too cold will quicken the deterioration of an EV battery, so it is advisable to limit the extent to which your vehicle is exposed to those extremes. Many automakers equip electric vehicles with auxiliary cooling as well heating systems, but owners should only resort to those options when it is unavoidable. For instance, avoid parking your EV outside during winter because the cold will shorten battery life.

Limit your use of fast chargers

During a road trip, it is inevitable that you will rely on fast chargers to juice up your EV and be on your way. However, experts recommend that you use slower charging systems as often as you can to maintain battery integrity. Fast charging is associated with more heat generation, and that heat degrades battery life a little faster.

That said, researchers are working to develop technologies that can charge EVs super fast while minimizing heat generation. Until such technologies are widely available, avoid using fast chargers as your default or preferred way to charge the vehicle.

Avoid total battery depletion or charging to 100%

In general, electric vehicle batteries (and most other batteries) shouldn’t be drained to zero or charged to 100%. This is because those extremes quicken battery degradation. Some manufacturers have even equipped their EVs with systems to prevent charging to 100% or depleting to zero so that the expected battery life is maintained.

As an EV owner, monitor the charge level of your battery and juice up when the battery reaches 20% or stop charging when it reaches 80% to 90% charge level.

Pay attention to the cooling system

Electric vehicles also have cooling systems, and these play an important role in keeping the vehicle’s moving components within the desired temperature range to avoid premature aging. Some EVs have a coolant fluid while others use more sophisticated methods to keep the vehicle cool. Read the user manual and replace or flush the cooling system at the intervals recommended by the manufacturer. For example, Ford recommends that owners of the F-150 Lightning check the cooling system every six months.

Just as with gas-powered vehicles, EVs require tire rotation and replacement, brake pad and brake fluid maintenance, and so on. Overall, EVs are less costly to maintain given their fewer moving parts, but always read the manual provided by the different manufacturers such as Fisker Inc. (NYSE: FSR) so that you know exactly what the electric vehicle you own requires in terms of periodic maintenance.
