CATL Announces Superfast EV Battery Offering 400km Range After 10-Minute Charge

Chinese battery manufacturer CATL has announced the launch of a novel “superfast charging” battery design with a 434-mile range capable of charging up to 249 miles (400 km) in only 10 minutes. The largest battery manufacturer on the globe claims the battery is the world’s first “superfast charging” electric vehicle battery with the potential to spur electric vehicle adoption by alleviating range anxiety.

Unlike traditional diesel and petrol-powered cars that rely on America’s extensive network of fueling stations for their refueling needs, EVs are constrained to a limited and relatively unreliable charging network. Most of America’s public charging infrastructure is concentrated in California and large cities, significantly limiting access to charging stations in rural and low-income communities.

Furthermore, EV drivers often have to deal with issues such as long wait lines, complex charging procedures and nonfunctional chargers in public charging stations. These factors coupled with long charging times relative to refueling internal combustion engine (ICE) cars have contributed to a phenomenon called range anxiety and dampened EV demand among consumers.

The new lithium-ion battery design from Chin-based Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited (CATL) could reduce range anxiety by allowing for much more energy-dense EV batteries while significantly reducing charging times. According to CATL, in-house researchers increased the battery’s range and charging time by leveraging a “brand-new superconducting electrolyte formula” that enhanced conductivity.

CATL chief scientist Dr. Wu Kai noted that the future of electric vehicle batteries should be anchored in increasingly advanced technology and affordability for ordinary users. For the United States and other nations to achieve their electric vehicle pledges, most of their residents, not just high-income earners with disposable income, will have to transition to electric cars.

Optimizing the battery design process to develop energy-dense, faster charging along with affordable EV batteries will bring electric vehicle costs down while making it easier for regular drivers to transition from ICE vehicles to battery electric vehicles. CATL’s new battery has around 60% more range than the average electric car and can charge much faster than level 3 and even fast chargers, making the batteries a great addition to next-generation electric cars.

The battery manufacturer will start mass producing the new lithium-ion batteries later in 2023. While CATL did not divulge which automakers would receive the first batches of batteries, the company currently supplies batteries to Tesla, BMW, Toyota, Daimler AG, Volvo, Honda and Volkswagen.

If CATL commercializes these new batteries within the promised timeline, it may not take long before manufacturers such as Nikola Corporation (NASDAQ: NKLA) adopt those superior batteries in order to increase the competitiveness of their vehicles in different EV markets.
