Recent innovations in electric vehicle batteries could allow automakers to build electric cars that can travel as much as 3,000 miles on a single charge. Researchers have developed a groundbreaking silicon-based EV battery with the potential to completely transform the global electric vehicle industry by making range anxiety, one of the largest barriers to EV adoption, a total non-factor.
Compared to the average petrol- and diesel-powered car, EVs have little range. While an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle driver can simply pull into one of the hundreds of thousands of gas stations dotted across the U.S., electric vehicle drivers have to plan their routes very carefully to ensure they don’t run out of power and become stranded. In regions with sparse public EV charging infrastructure, EV ownership simply isn’t feasible for drivers who don’t have home chargers.
Equipping electric cars with extremely energy-dense batteries is one way to alleviate the challenges caused by limited public charging infrastructure and range anxiety. While the lithium-ion batteries that are used to power modern electric cars have their benefits, we have reached the point where additional gains in range are canceled out by the extra weight needed to carry this increased energy capacity. As a result, researchers have been experimenting with different EV chemistries to create new, energy-dense designs.
This includes replacing the graphite anode, a critical part of the battery that stores energy, with a silicon alternative, or eschewing li-ion batteries with liquid electrolytes for solid-state lithium batteries. Silicon has superior energy storage capabilities compared to graphite but typically expands when it is charged, damaging the battery and increasing safety risks. Solid-state batteries have also exhibited a lot of potential, especially in their increased durability and safety levels, but their complexity and poor scalability mean it will be a long time before they hit the market.
In the meantime, South Korean researchers are working to address the drawbacks of silicon anodes. Pohang University of Science & Technology professors Youn Soo Kim and Soojin Park teamed up with Sogang University’s professor Jaegeon Ryu to develop a binder material that could prevent silicon swelling when charging. The research team’s efforts were fruitful, allowing them to develop a game-changing EV battery that can store up to ten times more electricity compared to EV batteries with graphite anodes.
Professor Park says that the team’s findings have the potential to increase lithium-ion energy density and extend electric vehicle range significantly, noting that incorporating silicon-based anodes into EV batteries could provide drivers with a tenfold increase in range.
Such technological advancements will be critical to accelerating electric vehicle adoption, particularly in regions with limited charging infrastructure. As battery innovations continue to evolve, they will play a key role in reducing transport emissions and supporting the global transition to cleaner transportation.
Entities like SolarBank Corp. (NASDAQ: SUUN) (Cboe CA: SUNN) (FSE: GY2) manufacturing solar systems and batteries are likely to keep an eye on these latest developments in battery chemistry since they could open new opportunities to offer next-generation products to their customers.
