Unprecedented Chip Shortage Lengthens Wait Times for EV Buyers

As more people become interested in electric vehicles because of the high costs of gasoline and the government rebates as well as a growing awareness about climate change, potential buyers are being told they have to wait for months and even years before their preferred EV can be available. The worldwide shortage of microchips is one key bottleneck preventing manufacturers from ramping up their production to meet growing demand. Microchips control nearly every function in electric vehicles from monitoring the state of charge in the battery to the driver assist function and how the touchscreen on the dash operates. When…

Car Dealers, Mechanics Grapple with New Challenges as Electrification Intensifies

As the demand for electric vehicles grows in different regions around the world, car dealerships and mechanics are coming face-to-face with new challenges as the changes brought by electric cars filter through to them. Given that electric vehicles can have very high-power electric systems, to the tune of 800 volts in some cases, mechanics need to acquaint themselves with these systems in order to stay safe while doing their work. For example, one would imagine that a panel beater may not need to know much about the current running through an EV, but this specialist is required to learn how…

Xpeng’s EV Deliveries Drop to Half of Nio, Shares Slide

According to statements released by a trio of Chinese electric vehicle  startups, the October deliveries made by Xpeng dropped to about one-half of those made by its local rivals Nio Inc. and Li Auto. This poor sales performance caused the shares of Xpeng to drop versus those of its rivals. While Xpeng reported that it had delivered 5,101 EVs in October, Nio says it dispatched 10,059 electric vehicles to its customers while Li Auto delivered a total of 1,052 cars during the month of October. The “Frunk” Proves Divisive in Nascent EV Industry

The race for who dominates the electric vehicle industry has barely started as engineers at different EV manufacturing facilities battle to boost EV range as well as the speed at which the batteries can be charged, among other issues of electric vehicles. However, the front trunk or “frunk,” is proving to be a divisive factor, with some complaining about the features while others are reporting it could popularize electric vehicles in ways no manufacturer had imagined possible. For starters, there seems to be no agreement regarding the necessity of a frunk on an electric vehicle other than using as extra…

Roaring Chevy Bolt Sales Underscore Americans’ Need for Affordable EVs

General Motors has an exciting new lineup of electric vehicles, including the GMC Hummer EV, Cadillac Lyriq and Silvarado EV (a pickup truck). However, the company’s star of the moment seems to be the Chevrolet Bolt, an electric vehicle that was first introduced in 2016 and has had a bit of a turbulent history. The Chevy Bolt, as it is popularly called, almost had the rug pulled from under it after a series of issues. In 2021, the company suspended the production of the Bolt because it had a defect that could trigger spontaneous battery fires. The company went as…

Will EVs Trigger Death of Gas Stations?

Gas stations have been a staple of our roads for more than a century, but the emergence of electric vehicles is suddenly challenging the very survival of these familiar features of American roads and highways. As more people buy EVs, different businesses, such as gas stations, convenience stores and even standalone charging stations, have developed to meet the demand to avail charging facilities to motorists on the go. A close look at the infrastructure bill passed by the Biden administration reveals an ambitious plan to boost EV charging infrastructure by building at least half a million charging stations along major…
