YouGov Data Shows EV Owners are More Receptive to New Technologies

Data published by YouGov Profiles has revealed that electric vehicle owners in the United States tend to be more receptive to new technologies. According to the data, 2% of American car owners said an electric car was their household’s primary vehicle, with EV owners exhibiting greater interest in cutting-edge technology compared to non-EV drivers.

Furthermore, the data showed that electric vehicle owners owned smart thermostats at greater rates, a clear indication of the way EV drivers are drawn to new technologies.

Gasoline-powered cars still account for the vast majority of vehicles on American roads at 88%, followed by hybrid and diesel cars at 7% and 3% respectively. Electric vehicle adoption in the U.S. is largely constrained by high purchase prices and limited public charging infrastructure across most of the country.

Even so, EV ownership rates are still rising, albeit at an extremely slow pace, and the Americans who opt for electric cars are more likely to be enthusiastic about new technologies. The YouGov Profiles data found that in addition to being more passionate about trying new tech, electric vehicle owners in the U.S. engaged with home smart technology at much higher rates than gas and diesel car owners.

This enthusiasm for cutting-edge technologies, especially smart tech, is emblematic of the type of person who is likely to buy an electric car. Unsurprisingly, Millennials accounted for 43% (4 in 10) of the Americans who said their primary vehicles were electric, while the same age demographic made up just 26% of the drivers with a gas, diesel, or hybrid car as their primary vehicle.

Vehicle owners in both groups were, on average, middle-income, but there were some differences in income range. 28% of the EV drivers reported higher incomes compared to 11% of the diesel, gas, or hybrid owners.

On the other hand, just 14% of the EV owners reported lower income compared to 33% of drivers with diesel, hybrid, or gasoline-powered cars. The demographic data shows that American electric vehicle ownership skews heavily toward higher-earning Millennial professionals.

Data from YouGov Profiles also indicates that EV owners often have an early-adopter mindset that just isn’t present in non-EV drivers. 75% said technology has improved their lives compared to 63% of owners of diesel, gas, or hybrid vehicles.

They were also much more likely to try new technologies, with 6 in 10 EV owners (59%) saying they are often interested in experimenting with new apps, services, and tech products, with 44% noting that they tend to be the first in their social circles to try out new technological services and products.

It would be interesting to hear what insights EV industry players like Massimo Group (NASDAQ: MAMO) obtain from this YouGov report and how they can leverage this information in their efforts to expand their market penetration.
