Locked out of the North American vehicle market, Chinese electric vehicle firms are increasingly focusing their efforts on Norway, currently one of the largest and fastest-expanding EV markets in Europe. EVs represented 98.8% of new vehicle registrations across the Nordic nation in October, reaching 15,536 new units by the end of the month.
Chinese brands made up 20% of the Norwegian electric vehicle market in October, with Tesla and Toyota together accounting for nearly 20% of the overall market. The Norwegian Road Information Authority (OFV) notes that new vehicle registrations last month surpassed every October for the past three decades at 15,725 units across several drivetrains.
Most of these vehicles had electric drivetrains, giving Norway a 98.8% electrification rate during the month of October. This is consistent with the country’s drivetrain demographic for the year to date; battery electric vehicles (BEVs) made up 98% of all vehicle registrations in Norway, making the country one of the most prolific EV adopters on the globe.
According to OFV, Norway’s vehicle market is ‘almost entirely electric’. EVs have largely muscled out internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and taken over the country’s car market, and now competition is mostly between different vehicle models and brands on aspects like financing, price, space, range, and delivery time.
Predictions from the OFV see 2026 potentially surpassing the record EV sales registered in 2025. New passenger car registrations for the past 10 months already eclipsed sales during the same timeframe in 2025 by 5.2%. Battery electric vehicles accounted for most of the new passenger cars registered across Norway in October at 15,536 units, followed by just 89 diesel-powered cars (0.6%), 53 full hybrid gas cars (0.3%), 33 plug-in gas hybrids (0.20%), and 14 gas-powered vehicles (0.1%).
Tesla’s bestselling Model Y accounted for 1,429 units, with the Toyota bZ4X, VW ID.4, XPeng G6, plus the Audi Q4 e-tron closing out the top five at 725, 553, 542, and 535 units respectively. T The Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW iX3, BYD Evo 4×4, Toyota Land Cruiser and Volvo EX30 complete the top 10; the Changan Deepal S05 ranks eleventh.
Chinese EVs may not be responsible for most Norwegian electric vehicle registrations, but they are in the top ten and are fielding increasing demand. With a fifth of new vehicles registered in October coming from a Chinese brand, which the OFV confirms is the greatest share of EV registrations Norway has ever seen in a single month, Chinese brands clearly have room to grow in Norway’s car market.
The policy regime in Norway has undoubtedly helped to bring those impressive EV sales figures into reality, and North American firms like Massimo Group (NASDAQ: MAMO) will be left wondering when similar supportive policies will ever be enacted in the U.S. and the other markets they target.
