Why EVs Are Better Than ICE Vehicles in Winter

Electric vehicles may offer drivers a more superior driving experience in the winter compared to their gas-powered counterparts. Although we know that cold weather can impact EV performance by slowing down chemical reactions in the battery and reducing output, EVs offer an objectively superior experience despite the limitations caused by cold weather.

Loss of range during cold weather is unavoidable for EV drivers. On top of slowed chemical reactions in the battery limiting its output, your EV will also require energy to keep both the battery pack and the cabin warm. Since it generally requires more energy to heat an EV in the winter, heating can cause a major dent in the range.

However, note that even internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles lose efficiency and range in the winter. Colder air is denser, requiring more energy to push through, and viscous liquids in the ICE car will need more time and energy to warm up and reach optimal operating temperatures.

Electric cars are superior to ICE vehicles because the efficiency of their electric motors reduces heat waste by a wide margin, allowing for the redistribution of waste heat into the cabin and saving energy use. Rather than spend several minutes waiting for an engine to heat their car, EV drivers can power up separate heating elements as soon as their cars start.

Furthermore, the low drag coefficients of most electric vehicle models means the cars can slip through denser cold air with less effort compared to their fossil-powered counterparts. This means that on average, an electric car will require less energy to heat up and push through cold air in the winter. EV drivers also have the luxury of immediate heating instead of waiting in the cold for several minutes until the cabin heats up.

In fact, electric-vehicle owners with private home chargers can plug their cars in and use energy from the grid, rather than the battery, to prewarm their EVs before setting off. Cadillac Lyriq lead-development engineer Kevin Cansiani says Lyriq drivers can use this preheating feature via the My Cadillac App, the center console touchscreen, or the remote cabin-conditioning button on the key fob.

EV drivers also enjoy better handling during colder weather compared to fossil-fuel vehicle drivers. The presence of viscous liquids and their susceptibility to cold can affect how fast and accurately the engine responds to the traction control system. Electric cars, on the other hand, have electric motors that can provide the precise amount of traction needed at any given moment.

EV makers such as Lucid Motors (NASDAQ: LCID) can sell more electric vehicles if the driving public becomes increasingly aware that fossil-fuel vehicles fare worse than EVs on various performance parameters during winter.
